Natural Rubber Latex Case Study

Superior Essays
Natural rubber latex is a raw material harvested from the rubber trees known as H. brasiliensis. There are about eight Hevea plant species from the Euphorbiaceae family are known to produce natural rubber latex, but only H. brasiliensis species is economically exploited. This tree is originally found growing in the Amazon basin of South America but now grown in plantations of rubber producing nations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand (Tuan Muhammad, 2009). Natural rubber latex was discovered in 1496 when Christopher Columbus and his crew saw indigenous people of Amazon play with a bouncing ball made from dry natural rubber. Since then, samples of natural rubber had been sent back to Europe from time to time.

The sudden increase in the manufacturing sector was catalyzed by Rubber Institute of Malaysia (RRIM), now known as Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) which identify the potential growth of rubber based industrialization. Many research and development (R&D) of rubber products were conducted and a wide range of incentives to facilitate the industrialization process were provided (Lembaga Getah Malaysia, 2013). Hence, the natural rubber industry had progressively evolved from being an agricultural based industry into products manufacturing based industry (Zaharah, 1998). The downstream natural rubber industry can be divided into two major categories, namely dry natural rubber products and natural rubber latex products. Dry natural rubber products include footwear, tires, hoses, engine mountings, dock fenders, and seismic bearings. On the other hand, natural rubber latex products encompass gloves, condoms, catheters, foam mattresses, balloons, and latex threads. According to Low and Abdul Kadir (2010 ), natural rubber latex gloves represent 80% of the total export value of natural rubber products, which is estimated to grow at a rate of more than 10% per year. This is due mainly to the increased usage of natural rubber latex gloves among healthcare workers and a growing public awareness of the hazards posed by widespread infectious diseases such as the pandemic virus influenza A (H1N1), …show more content…
In materials science and engineering, the word “latex” is used to denote a stable colloidal dispersion of polymeric substances in an aqueous medium. Natural rubber latex is a high molecular weight polymer of isoprene (C5H8), whereas one double bond unit exists for each C5H8 group. Rubber molecule has a long chain polymer structure, which almost 98% of the isoprene is in the form of cis- 1,4- polyisoprene configuration (Figure 2.1).

He's a lemur named Paul. Polymers are made up of many many molecules all strung together to form really long chains (and sometimes more complicated structures, too). What makes polymers so fun is that how they act depends on what kinds of molecules they're made up of and how they're put together. The properties of anything made out of polymers really reflect what's going on at the ultra-tiny (molecular) level.…

However, safety regulations often extend beyond just a company’s interactions with its workers. Safety often regulates the interaction between the company and its value chain as well as with consumers. As such, Gril-Kleen must be considered food safe, heat safe, and skin safe (Hisrich, et al., 2013). Further, many labeling and warning requirements have been mandated for every step of the process from production to use (United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, n.d.). In addition to existing regulation, companies should try to predict areas that may become regulated regarding their products.…

My topic of interest is the science behind slime. I have researched and found ideas that relate to topics we have learned so far in the first marking period in science. Slime is made up of elements that are mixed together. The "slime" formula is sodium tetraborate decahydrate (Na2B4O7•10H2O), commonly known as borax, to a solution of white glue and water. White glue is an example of a polymer--it is made of long chains of polyvinyl clear plastic film molecules.…

Initial Reflection Walking into the simulation, I felt a lot more comfortable than I did in the beginning of the semester. It was really helpful to have that practice simulation earlier in the semester, because I felt like I knew what to expect and I was a little more confident in my abilities. My first reaction when I came out of the simulation was that I was glad it was over and it really was not as awkward being recorded as I thought it would be. In terms of the conversation, I felt that it was a little choppy at times and I was not pleased with how that went. During the time when Chris was talking about Jacob’s situation, I was thrown of guard for the situation to take that turn and I really felt like I was not prepared with the right…

We should all give them hearty thanks, because, without bees, we would have ceased to exist long ago. Humans eat their honey, use their wax, and rely on bees to help our food grow, benefiting us all.…

Mendes was initially a Brazilian rubber tapper, who organized a union of seringueiros, or rubber tree tappers in the National Council of Rubber Tappers to protest the cutting of the trees by the cattle ranchers. Chico Mendes demonstrated the positive impact one man can have on the environment, and proved how detrimental man can be in nature. Although some tangible factors can build distinctive characteristics, we should not overlook role intangible factors such as “corporate reputation”, “brand equity” and “customer-relationship management” in adding company value. Despite innovation being used to differentiate certain brands in the market, tires are close to being commodities, and competition from low-labor cost manufacturing and standardization enter a downward pressure on price. Hence, Michelin has had to a brand image to pursue earning.
