Nathan Hale was a spy for the patriots in the American revolution. When he was just 14 years old he was sent to Yale college. After he graduated from college he became a school teacher.
During the Battle of Long Island in August and September 1776 which led to the capture of New York City by the British. In this battle Hale volunteered to go behind enemy lines and spy on the British troops.
During his mission, he was captured by the British troops and hung on September 22, 1776, in Manhattan, New York. His last words were "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my only country."
