Davis begins the story by showing the reader the history of each major character in the story. This is beneficial to the reader because the story focuses on one character at a time, allowing the reader time to remember the characters and differentiate between them. Once the reader is familiar with the characters, the development of the text changes.…

Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. Chris McCandless’ actions can be seen as rebellious at first, but as time goes on, it is clear that there is hostility between his parents and himself that he does not want to face or try to fix. In a dysfunctional family, there are two extremes when it comes to the outcome of the children: the rebel or the conformist. At the beginning of the novel nick tells us that he will be a good narrator as he has learned to not judge people too quickly, "i am inclined to reserve judgement". This quote from nick shows that he feels as though he is a reliable narrator and that everyone deserves a chance before they are too harshly judged. Fitzgerald uses his opinion on this to show that before the events of the novel nick seemed open minded and excited about the new possibilities. However, after the events of the novel take place nick seems a lot more cynical about the people who live these kind of rich lifestyles and care about no-one but themselves.…
