Nasogastric Tube Reflection

Improved Essays
This week in clinical, I was assigned a patient with a nasogastric tube. A NG tube is very painful for the patient if it is slightly moved, so I was a little nervous taking care of this patient. I walked into to the room and met with the patient and his wife. I began to ask him questions about his past medical history, his medications, and current state of being. I then took vital signs. After finishing vital signs, I realized that his pulse was 54 bmp, which is very low. So, I discussed this with the nurse and she told me that is normal pulse for this patient. I then did am care on the patient. I had to be very careful because of his NG tube, so changing the gown was the most difficult part of the procedure. The patient then stated that he wanted to go and sit in the chair. …show more content…

With the help of my nursing instructor, we got the patient up and he walked to the end of the hallway and back without any complaints of pain or dizziness. I also did a head to toe assessment on the patient with the nursing instructor because I want to be more confident in my abilities in assessing

As per the hospital policy, I then removed the patient’s mask giving 2% oxygen and monitored if the patient could maintain 100% oxygen saturation, on room air.…
