The kitchen was connected to the long living room by a large marble counter. The living room was divided into two spaces by brick pillars. The left side was where the couch and TV were and the right was where we had a pool table before my friend Justin accidentally broke it. The living room now had hard tile floors instead of carpet and oddly had a glass table in place of the living room furniture. Even with all these changes, the silence almost seemed to be filled with the voices of my family. Even though I knew no one lived in the house, I walked so carefully I felt as if I were hovering. I glided through the kitchen, and realized that even though my home has changed, my family stayed the same. I’m even closer to my older sister, as I shared a room with her for the first half of a year in the new house. I stealthily passed by the front door in fear that one of the passing cars would shine their yellow lights through the window and spot me. I continued around the corner but stopped under the stairs. I looked up the thirteen steps, which I had counted many times as a child, and saw the window in the top room. I could see the moonlight casting a soft, blue-gray light on the walls of the upstairs hallway. On my way, I saw the guest room where our exchange student Rom had lived. She was so beautiful and happy all the time that she never ceased to make us smile. When she went home it was as if we lost a family member we’d known forever. I smiled for the first time after coming here just thinking of her. Even though she is gone and across an entire ocean, nothing has changed. We are still family to her and she to us. I passed the oddly placed glass table and unlocked the door to the back porch. I carefully opened the door to make no noise and stepped onto the cold wood.I thought of my birthday parties again. Every year I grew and celebrated that on this very porch, that would never happen again. At least not in this
