7:15: One. Two. Three. Four. I take four steps hopping on my left foot as I walk out of my bedroom. No, you didn’t do it right. Try again. I go back. I put on my pink slippers with the bows because I can never leave my room without them. One. Two. Three. Four. I reach the bathroom where I wash my hands thoroughly and think about the day to come. What can I tell my parents today? I caught a cold overnight. I got food poisoning. I would do anything to not go to school. The thought of people and places outside of my own house gives me a stream of shivers up my spine. I wipe my hands against the white cloth hanging on the wall. What if there are still germs on my hands? I turn the faucet on once again and let my fingers be brushed by the warm soothing water as I lather my hands with a large quantity of soap. Trying my best to look unwell ad sleepy, I walk downstairs to greet my parents as my unbrushed hair makes a mess around my face.

I am scared. Scared of the others. It 's a new beginning, but I feel something different this time. I enter filled with consternation. I sit down and find myself facing unfamiliar faces. The man who is in charge greets us and asks us all to introduce ourselves. Public speaking. Does this mean a situation like at school? I start to panic and sweat as my heart keeps beating faster and faster,. It skips a beat when I hear “Claire are you okay? Why don’t you introduce yourself?” I took a deep breath and started by “Um..H-Hi, my name is C-Cl-Claire.” Uneasy, I feel an urge of energy rush through my body as I almost darts out of the room, when I feel a hand tap my shoulder. When I turn around I notice a tall, fair boy with light blonde hair and piercing green eyes. “I believe in you”, he says giving me a wholehearted smile. A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. Even so, each student's differing personality, aspirations, culture and tribulations falsifies the belief that adulthood is that straightforward. Thus, in order to define the moment that marked my transition into adulthood, I must first define what being an adult means to me.…

Growing up in a single parent household, I have faced many trials and tribulations. One of these trials and tribulations was growing up in a low income family with limited opportunities. I was a bright, productive student, in 9th grade year I tried my hardest, even in math and science, to make my freshman year the best and most productive; I got good grades, joined the track team and got a job. But then during my 10th through 11th grade years I began to experience verbal and mental abuse at the hand of a family member. At one point I had run away from home to get away from my problems.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

Try to imagine your mom or dad has to go to a foreign country that you have never been or even heard of, for long periods of time. That seemed to happen a lot to my dad. My dad is a Navy Chief in the United States, he goes on deployments a lot and for long periods of time. As the days until the new school year dwindle, I begin panicking. My counselor tells me I have little chance of getting any meaningful extension of my homebound instruction. I have failed at all attempts to find a homeschooling solution that I can afford and that would work for me, and I begin to accept that I will have to suffer two more years in awful anxiety. I talk to my friends about it, and one of them mentions that their girlfriend is being homeschooled this year. When I ask about the specifics, he mentions Penn Foster.…
