Persuasive Essay About My Writing Process

Improved Essays
Writing has been a vital component of my academic success. During this current term I have experienced writing a narrative and persuasive essay. The past eight weeks, I have learned that writing enhances my communication and thinking skills, in order to give a clear view of my ideas to my readers. Writing is the main foundation upon which my skills, my knowledge, and my brainpower is measured academically and professionally. My writing process has been refined throughout this course specifically¬—choosing my topics carefully, properly researching my topics, outlining my essays for better organization, and editing my essays using different sources.
The writing process has many intricate steps. Looking back at my narrative and persuasive essays, I found it difficult to select a topic. As I was brainstorming, I found myself sifting through several ideas and lacked the organizational skills to make a decision. Using a visual organizer helps categorize my ideas adequately. I used a concept map to clarify the correlation between each topic choice. The visual organizer assisted in narrowing down my main topic and eventually a thesis statement. The feedback I received for my narrative essay was that my thesis statement was not transparent. I wrote, “The day I was laid off from my comfy job at IBM, I had to construct a tough decision that not only affected me, but my entire household.” My thesis did not clearly state the decision I made and questioned later. I changed the thesis statement to, “Reaching the decision to not go back to the company I enjoyed working for and setting my sites on a new career path was extremely difficult.” This thesis statement worked better for me because I stated the decision I made and expressed that I had an issue making the decision. Researching the topic for my persuasive essay was effortless. I used the Shapiro Library and decided to only use up to six sources. In past discussions of this course, I have stated that sometimes I include too much information in my writing. I realized that keeping my sources to a minimum will help me minimize the amount of unnecessary information in my essays. In addition to the difficulty settling on a topic for the persuasive and narrative essays; I found it difficult to outline my persuasive essay more than my narrative essay.

Outlining my essays prevents me from getting perplexed. The feedback I received for my persuasive essay was to focus on the transitioning of my paragraphs and organization so I could give a clear train of thought to my readers. Even though the main idea was clear in my outline, the placement of my paragraphs were disorganized. I began reading my work out loud in order to figure out what type of transitional phrases and conjunctive adverbs to use. I also realized I did not take advantage of extending the time spent on my outline. I need to spend more time constructing my outlines before I begin writing. Outlining an essay assists in determining when to discuss the key points to support the main idea. Outlining an essay keeps the writer on topic and structures the flow of the essay to avoid confusing the reader. Subsequently, I begin the process of drafting by writing one section at a time. I incorporate my outline into separate paragraphs for each section of the paper starting with the introduction, the body, and then the conclusion. Sometimes I write the introduction last depending on the nature of the essay. There are times that I don’t figure out what the thesis statement should be until I get to the conclusion of my paper. The feedback I received on my persuasive paper was to expand on the reasoning behind some of my points made. In the future, I will give reasoning behind certain ideas in order for the reader to have a better understanding. The drafting process helps the writer figure out the exact tone of the essay. Drafting gives the writer the opportunity to put thoughts into complete paragraphs. Identifying the purpose of the essay is the key component to the drafting process. This is the first step to figuring out how to draw the reader into the essay and keep them interested. I also take this time to gather all of my references. In my persuasive paper, I received feedback about using the exact page numbers when including

As an inexperienced writer, I often find myself looking at a blank page on my computer and wondering what my point is and how I will be able to express it. Sometimes it’s hard to explain your thoughts to others if they are not clear in your mind either. Therefore, I know that I can’t sit and write if I don’t have an outline, a map in which my thoughts follow a logical path. By using an outline, I can organize my ideas and make sure that the good ones don’t suddenly disappear in the abyss of my…

However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

There are numerous amounts of ways to write a paper or essay and they are all different. In the book The Transition to College Writing, Hjortshoj suggests that making an outline is one of the most important steps in the writing process and it plays a big role in the organization of a paper. Hjorishoj believes that if an outline if not made, then the paper will not be as effective as it would be with an outline. Outlines help to keep the paper organized and help to make sure that the topic is focused on throughout the whole entire paper. Without an outline, the paper can easily wander off into other topics and the paper will get very confusing.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Through IN151, I have seen that my writing has improved tremendously. From IN150, Dr. O’Conner hammered into his students’ heads that argumentative pieces of writing should include the author’s own voice and opinion in them, and with this, I was given the opportunity to put my own opinion in a piece of writing through taking IN151. During this semester, my peers and I went through extensive research to draft up an essay on a particular controversial issue. If anyone has ever said that writing is hard, they probably did not have to brainstorm of a topic to write on. In my opinion, this is the hardest part of any piece of writing.…

In order to become a stronger writer one must recognize his errors. In my previous essays I have not done a good job of expressing my subtopics. I have made the mistake of hiding my subtopics, making them unclear. In order to fix this problem I could create a web or some sort of visual that will allow me to organize my thoughts. Having a specific sentence in the beginning of each paragraph will also orientate the reader on what to look for in that specific paragraph.…
