The creation story consisted of seven days. On the first day, God created light. He separated the light from the dark by calling the day by light and the darkness he called night. On the second day God created the firmament which he called heaven. There were lower waters and upper waters, below and above the firmament. God created dry land on the third day and he called it ‘Earth’ and he called the waters ‘Seas’. He separated the dry land from the water and he also created every plant and tree and each living seed. On the fourth day God created the moon, the stars and the sun. He located them in the heavens to provide seasons for each year and light for earth. One sacred texts is The Torah which is know as the Five Books of Moses which many Jews regard as the word of God. It is believed to be equivalent of the Jewish Bible and is the holiest book in Judaism, the key to all religious thoughts. The Torah was written by different people at different times. Consisting of 929 chapters and was originally written in Hebrew, it has been divided into three sections; Scared Writings, Laws and Prophets and the final chapter is Chronicles.
The second most important sacred text in Judaism is the Talmud which is a collection of Jewish laws, poems, biographies, traditions, anecdotes and prophecies. It is divided into two parts; the Mishna and the Gemara. The flame is a symbol of God’s relationship to human beings and the world. Another symbol is the six pointed star which is also known as the Star of David, or the Shield of David in Hebrew. Some Jewish people wear a good luck charm shaped like a hand with an eye in the centre, it is called the Hamsa and is believed to be God’s protective hand and his watchful eye. The tallit is also know and as prayer shawl in English, it is worn during most prayers and symbolises that God is wrapping his laws around and also protecting the Jewish people.
Social Structure:
At the top of the Judaism social structure is the Cohen which are the priests who have certain rights and duties in the synagogue, in the middle are the Levites who are members of the Hebrew tribe of Levi who provide assistance to the priests in the worship of the Jewish temple. At the bottom of the structure are the Israelites who are members of the ancient Hebrew nation.
