My Writing Reflection

Throughout the course of the semester, my ability as a writer has increased at a slight level. The semester began on a rough patch with my initial submission of assignment one, but that was quickly resolved in my revisions. Since that point, my grades have been relatively similar. I would accredit this improvement to the feedback I received on the first assignment, although some of my faults could be seen in the next assignment as well. Since that point, however, my writing has been relatively consistent. The course played an important role in how I approach prewriting, my role as a writer, how I structure my writings, and just a better idea of who I am as a writer. The preparations of my writing made the most improvement from previous years. …show more content…
I knew that teachers and the occasional peers would be viewing my works, but I had no idea how to approach that situation. As a result, I would just write as if my reader was completely oblivious to the topic I was writing about. While long run this strategy proved to be beneficial in increasing the clarity of my writing, it lacked persona. Assignment three really got me to think about this aspect of my writings. Upon recognizing what role, I would play as a writer, everything from that point just seemed to click and run smoothly for the remaining duration of the assignment. Since that point, whenever I write this is a factor that I am always considering. Another aspect I improved was when it comes to the …show more content…
Throughout my writing career, my introductions had been consistently weak simple. Upon realizing this with assignment one, I began to consider how I might be able to capture the attention of my reader so that they would actually be interested to continue reading. Having a controversial or outrageous statement within the introduction, the audiences curiously would help promote them to continuing to read, making an introduction all the more effective. Beyond the overall format of my works, I began to consider what rhetorical strategies I use within these

The effectiveness of writing can be most simply be determined by its ability to sufficiently display a message across the the reader. Every piece of literature contains a message, whether blatantly obvious or hidden under written complexities. These messages, however, have a much stronger appeal to the audience while encompassed in personal interjections and anecdotes. When the reader can connect to the author, their message is much more effective and personal to the reader as opposed to cold statements of ideas. Deborah Tannen in “But What Do You Mean?”…

Journal Response The chapter “Helping Writers Think Rhetorically” by John C. Bean describes how important it is to have students thinking about their audience and purpose before starting to write their compositions. Bean explains how thinking about a targeted audience will give the writers a better idea about their audiences´ thinking before reading their papers and the expectations after having read their works. In the study, Bean comments that most of the times students mistake by thinking of their teacher as their only audience for their composition project. Therefore, Bean highlights the need to have students practicing writing to imaginary audiences in order to develop their skills to target different mindsets using different rhetorical…

and I was able to pinpoint students who struggled with this assignment. These are my text/text samples. After their first read/write of this article, I presented three rhetorical devices: ethos, pathos, and logos; then we did a close reading and annotation of the article using a gradual release method (I do, we do, they do, you do). Their first draft became a rough draft, then they edited it,…

I have also learned that my grades usually reflect on how well I followed the criteria of an assignment. I realize that I have unique points of views on certain topics and often like to give my own thoughts and explanations about a topic. I also know how to be straight to the point with whatever message I try to convey.…

In this course, the students were asked to act like a critically-literate citizen, which is someone who uses their skills as a literate person to impact society in a positive way. The point of this class is to strengthen our writing skills to become an even more effective citizen. To help strengthen our writing skills and to give us a way to organize our writing, we were told to use the MEAL Plan, which are paragraphs broken down into main ideas, evidence and analysis, and linking back to the larger claim. Our assignments included discussion boards with topics stated from the instructor, peer review responses to the discussion board assignments, writing essays, writing reflections essays, summarizing passages, and peer review responses from the essay our partner wrote. At first I was terrified about taking this class because I was already behind in this class when I started, but once I caught up, I was overjoyed with excitement about my grade.…

“You could have done this better.” This phrase encompasses the culmination of my writing experience. Throughout my scholastic experience, I have never truly developed a grasp of the concepts that come with being a great, or even a decent, writer. I have always gravitated towards the mathematical side of school, as I understood it and knew what I had to do. In math, they assign you a problem, and it has one clear solution.…

The two subject areas that I chose to complete my back to back lessons on were reading and writing. There were two major factors that went into my selection. The first was that there are only two times during the day when two lessons are taught back to back. The first is reading and writing in the morning and the other is social studies and science in the afternoon. Because I had already taught lessons in the science and social studies areas, I decided that it would benefit me more if I chose something different.…
