Reflection On Sarah Alford's Session

Improved Essays
On October 21, I recorded a 25-minute session with Sarah Alford. We spent the session brainstorming, discussing ways Sarah could research her topic, and planning how Sarah could develop her paper in the most efficient way. By the end of the session, Sarah wrote down a tentative plan to complete the first draft two weeks from now. After I watched the video to review my performance, the video revealed that I have improved in keeping eye contact with the consultant, letting the consultant do most of the talking, and asking appropriate questions to get the consultant thinking; at the same time, the video showed I still have improvements to make with body language and tone of voice. The first question I asked Sarah was, “What would you like …show more content…
When it comes to brainstorming, I think it is important for the tutee to have a comfortable working environment so he or she can explain his or her ideas freely. I think this structure was appropriate for the session because Sarah’s concerns were based on her writing process rather than her actual writing. The way I structure a brainstorming session in general is to start with the instructor’s requirements, then break the prompt down piece by piece. If the student already has ideas, then I will try to find ways the student can see his or her ideas from a different perspective. When a student does not have any ideas, I try as best as I can to not blatantly state ideas; rather, I try to get the student to realize potential ideas by asking the student questions about their paper topic and his or her understanding of the assignment. Between 7:58-8:52, I examined two of Sarah’s research topics, and suggested that she combine the two topics to create a new, and perhaps, interesting perspective to her research. Since she gave me material to work with, I feel that I handled the situation appropriately. She responded positively to the idea and wrote down notes about my …show more content…
The talk ratio was probably 40% me and 60% Sarah. I think this was appropriate considering Sarah was discussing her ideas with the paper. I did my best to not interrupt, and I indicated that I was following her train of thought by saying “okay.” (Note: After watching this video, I realized I said okay at least 20 times.) I believe I was an effective listener because I maintained eye contact when she spoke and nodded in agreement to what she was saying. However, I noticed that my eyes tended to wavier between her and the computer screen. It was appropriate when we were both looking at the computer, but I realize I need to make sure that I am making full eye contact with students rather than staring at their laptops. Sarah’s nonverbal communication and actions indicated that she listened to me when I spoke as well. She nodded and kept eye contact, and as I mentioned before she took notes while I talked. Overall, the video confirmed listening to consultants is one of my

Good morning, today I was asked to talk about the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson of this last conference, and explain my feelings towards it. I read the talk and felt that we as young men & young women should give more service to the church. In the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson, It stated, “Each person has something important to contribute and has unique talents and abilities that help the important work along.” The abilities that we as young women have help the service to spread like a weed. The big change that has helped spread this weed is the prophet just pronounced that 14 and older are now able to start ministering.…

Summarize: The author, Sarah Dover, urges the point that all prisoners deserve basic human rights. The idea is achieved through the use of Hamilton jail as an example. Dover claims that these prisoners’ voices are being silenced by the prison guards “are not working”. She claims that people that are treated the worst are the ones that have not yet been proven guilty. It is quite obvious that she is in favor of basic rights for prisoners.…

Expertise, or simply a hobby, what matters, in this case, is the passion we have for a specific interest. I decided to share with the class a recent interest I have for Salsa dancing. I enjoy the rhythm that allows me to embrace both upper and lower body movement, with that Latin flare. For that reason, the purpose for the assignment was to incorporate a how to basic dance step routine that could roughly define Salsa dancing. I am quite content that I communicated primarily through my hand gestures.…

Listening is an important skill of interpersonal communication. It helps to develop good interpersonal relationships with others. While communicating with others it is important to listen to another person carefully to interpret his/her message properly and accurately. In this communication episode I have used different listening strategies, like selecting, attending, understanding, remembering and responding to communicate effectively. “Listening is defined as selecting, attending to, constructing meaning from, remembering and responding to verbal and non-verbal messages”( Beebe, Beebe, Redmond, Geerinck and Salem-Wiseman, 2015, p.113 ).…

Self Assessment Analysis: Listening One major communication flaw of mine is my inability to listen to others at times. The idiom, “you have one mouth and two ears, so you should listen twice as much as you talk,” makes sense. However, it has been hard to implement this idea in my life. I have noticed in conversations that I sometimes “check out” and start thinking about other things, completely ignoring the person talking.…

In my second video, I caught myself looking down at my paper and looking at my clock and checking the time, which could be very distracting to the client and is something that I need to work on and improve. With that being said I felt more connected with my client when we did had eye contact, and during that time my client felt more safe with her problems, and she felt a sense of understanding and respect. Voice qualities are along the same lines as eye contact. It is very important to make your client feel comfortable. Comparing my first video to my last video I kept the same vocal tone both times.…
