The only thing that cannot be taken away from oneself, no matter the circumstances, is your name. This is why I think it is important for one to know what his or her name means. When I began thinking about my name, I started by interviewing my parents. I knew that I was named after my grandfather and my mother, but I did not know the origins of their names. I researched my first, middle, and last names using the Internet, interviewing my mother, and utilizing the library. I started with the name Robert. I discovered that the name Robert was actually the number one baby name for boys from 1924-1939 and was in the top five from 1906-1971 (Robert-Popularity of Robert, How Popular is the name Robert?). I had never known that Robert had been such a popular name. I also found that I share the name Robert with one of Hollywood’s most popular actors, Robert Downey Jr. (IMDb). This made me realize you can share a name with somebody and never even realize it. This shows that there were possibly many Brand’s immigrated into the United States at this time through Ellis Island.
