Adam, who is based out of Los Angeles, has been a major influence on the Jazz music scene. Down Beat Magazine recognized him as a “Rising Star” in the Annual Critic’s Poll and named him Co-winner of the “Jazz Instrumental Soloist Award” in June of 2000. Adam Schroeder has also been featured on national TV shows such as “The Voice” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. During the performance Adam Schroeder commended the Ball State Jazz program for their talent and work ethic. Ball State has one of the top Jazz programs in the country, and it is good to see someone with the credentials of Adam Schroeder recognize it.
The Jazz ensemble II was the first to perform in the concert. The director was Jen Siukola. The saxophone personnel consisted of Jacob Melton, Luke Fries, Kendell Fowler, Logan Neher and Andrew Campbell. The trumpet personnel consisted of Connor Freimuth, Dylan Abbott, Sean Alvarez, Jake Hostetler and Conor Fox. The ensemble was able to produce the full sound of the piece, but it was not so full to the point of it being overwhelming. The next song the Ensemble performed was Quiet Night of Quiet Stars. The piece was originally composed by Antonio Carolos Jobim and arranged by Gene Lees. Most people are familiar with the performance of this work being sung by Frank Sinatra but the version of Gene Lee’s arrangement substitutes the vocals with more rich sound from the instrumentals and the rendition by the Jazz Ensemble II was phenomenal. The final selection from the Jazz Ensemble II was Borrowed Time, which was arranged by Don Schamber. The sound of this piece was a good one to close out on because it changed the tempo and had a hint of rock and roll in the sound. The Faculty Jazz Quintet was the second performance.
The Faculty Jazz Quintet consisted of Mark Buselli on the trumpet, Nathan Bogert on the alto sax, Scott Routenberg on the piano, Nick Tucker on the bass, Cassius Goens on the drums and guest artist Adam Schroeder on the baritone. The composition they played was an original piece by the pianist Scott Routenberg. The piece was well put together and executed perfectly.
