The ensemble was able to produce the full sound of the piece, but it was not so full to the point of it being overwhelming. The next song the Ensemble performed was Quiet Night of Quiet Stars. The piece was originally composed by Antonio Carolos Jobim and arranged by Gene Lees. Most people are familiar with the performance of this work being sung by Frank Sinatra but the version of Gene Lee’s arrangement substitutes the vocals with more rich sound from the instrumentals and the rendition by the Jazz Ensemble II was phenomenal. The final selection from the Jazz Ensemble II was Borrowed Time, which was arranged by Don Schamber. The sound of this piece was a good one to close out on because it changed the tempo and had a hint of rock and roll in the sound. The Faculty Jazz Quintet was the second performance.
The Faculty Jazz Quintet consisted of Mark Buselli on the trumpet, Nathan Bogert on the alto sax, Scott Routenberg on the piano, Nick Tucker on the bass, Cassius Goens on the drums and guest artist Adam Schroeder on the baritone. The composition they played was an original piece by the pianist Scott Routenberg. The piece was well put together and executed perfectly. Scott revealed to the audience that the piece was written on September 7, which made the piece even more

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

it seemed like a song almost that you would hear at a coffee shop, very peaceful song. I could definetlly see myself listening to this song while studying or relaxing. Out of all the songs played at the concert, this song was the easiest for me to spot the style of the piece. The saxophone held the chorus and was the most prominent instrument in this…

In the other bands, there were only men. This band was also different from the other jazz concert I attended because they had guitars in this band. The two songs this jazz band played were, “Alter Ego” by James Williams and “Kozo’s Waltz” by Lee Morgan. I liked how during the first song, while someone had a solo, some of the other instruments would lightly play in the background. For example, while one of the men on the guitar had his solo, the saxophones stopped playing but the piano, other guitar, bass, and drums played quietly.…

For this first review I attended the Jazz Improvisation Ensemble concert here at the University of Redlands on Monday, November the 30th at eight in the evening in the Frederick Lowe Recital Hall. The concert featured two groups: the Eleven O’clock Jazz Improvisation Ensemble with charts that included “Sugar” by Stanley Turrentine, “Moon Alley” by Tom Harrell, and “Chicken Dog” by John Scofield; and the One O’clock Jazz Improvisation with charts that included “Joy Spring” by Clifford Brown, “Theme for Ernie” by Fred Lacey, and “Lyresto” by Kenny Burrell. For the in depth discussion, I have chosen to focus on “Chicken Dog” by Scofield. This piece by Scofield featured a quintet type ensemble that had Victoria Batta on flute, Joseph Buschatzke on guitar, Benjamin Purper on electric bass, Daniel Murphy on…

The second Musician I want to talk about would be Michael Lington during the live Jazz Concert. Michael Lington is the Sax player. He is a Danish- American contemporary Saxophonist , producer, songwriter, recording artist and a purveyor of soul and contemporary Jazz. I personally love the way how the concert went, even though I’m not in the actual performance, but I still felt how excited the audiences was during the concert. During the Concert the music was played very soft and it did not have anything like the big band or African influence kind of characteristics.…

    Kind Of Blue Analysis

In our everyday lives we improvise, with strangers, family, friends, teachers, anyone we interact with. It would be impossible to have a lively conversation with sparks of hilarity as well as passion thrown in when a group of friends are simply sitting around just talking to each other, bouncing ideas off of one other, or giving advice on serious or even not so serious events without improvising throughout. We as a society count on the ability of others to react immediately to what one person says that it is often forgotten by us and taken advantage of. In the liner notes, Bill Evans was able to bring that very thing we take for granted now and show the listeners of Kind of Blue how important improvisation was to this album and how it wouldn't…

It looked like it was a mixture of a clarinet and a saxophone. I really liked the sound of the trumpets which was surprising to me because hearing the trumpet perform was not my cup of tea, and after hearing them at this concert it change my view towards trumpets. There was interesting information with regards to the written program, although I would have liked to see an approximate time of when each song or music was going to be performed. But other than that it was straight forward, simple, and easy to…

The piece is not so long and they played it very well. It has four part: Departure, Arrival, Scherzo, and Arrival. I think there was a mistake in the program. The first Arrival should be Elegy, so the piece has Departure, Elegy, Scherzo and Arrival. They played each part separate by a stop.…

January 19th at precisely two in the afternoon, I found myself sitting in Dunham Hall room 1109, better known as the Choral Room. Within that one room radiated a warm, lively, and vibrant atmosphere. One room filled with a handful of friendly faces all shouting out their joy and encouragement to their friends and bandmates. It was in room 1109 that I experienced the smooth rhythmic sounds that gave me a new appreciation for Jazz. Let us begin with the piece I disliked the most out of the five that were performed.…
