Intro Through out life we become so identified with our own culture and circumstances, that we loose sight of others situations. To become more of a realistic and understanding individual it is important for us to remember that we are not all the norm, that others around us have different circumstances that we should all be aware of. That is the essence of multiculturalism. Is being a part of knowledge’s around you, not just your own.…
Perceived Multicultural Competency of Certified Substance Abuse Counselors is an article written by Pamela Lassiter and Catherine Yang. Their study was conducted using certified substance abuse counselors and certified clinical addictions specialists as study participants. Participants were certified through the state of North Carolina because their certifications are considered to be more progressive than other states. The Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale (MCKAS) was used as a measuring instrument to gauge each individual’s self-perceived abilities. The study supported that most participants considered themselves to be culturally competent but it also found that race and education affected the participants’ self-perception.…
The source is written by many different authors and it is mainly edited by the 4 authors mentioned above. These authors are one of the best scholars that tackle the controversial ideas of diversity, and Canadian policies. It respectfully challenges the saint idea that multiculturalism is great for Canada, however it does not claim Multiculturalism is actually bad. It continually demonstrates the underlying capability, the conventional restraints and the miniscule disorders of the policies and blinding discourse of multiculturalism.…

For example, the current reading curriculum I am forced to use with my ELD students includes people like Gregor Mendel and Theodore Roosevelt, but does not ever include readings on people like Cesar Chavez or Dolores Huerta. This is a clear example of assimilation within schools because the goal of assimilation is for students to adapt to the new culture and language as soon as possible and lose their identities while doing so (Bennett, 2014). The first language and home culture are seen as problems instead of advantages, so students might view their cultures as inferior. Furthermore, multicultural education is important in order for students to feel welcome, valued, and respected, which increases self-motivation, engagement, and participation in the…
The message to tourists is that there is much to do in Toronto, especially in the realms of arts and sports, even though the city is less well-known than its competitors, both domestic and foreign. The same big idea message serves its purpose here, but takes on a different meaning to highlight the variety of activities all stemming from different backgrounds. Toronto’s Multicultural center can be highlighted here as it features events like Muslim festivals, Guatemalan concerts, Christmas bazaars, and Japanese flower shows, to name a…
When reading ”Mobilizing culture, language, and educational practices, Fulfilling the promises of Mendez and Brown” by Moll, L (2010) it goes on to explain the landmark brown v. board of education (1954) involving the Mexican and Mexican American students who lived in California. The Méndez family brought this case in relation to brown and cultural aspects involving what was happing to education at that time. From the reading I did not know how important this case was to everyone but that the law allowed segregation to Asians and Native Americans and did not go into detail for Mexican children. I found it interesting that when Gonzalo asked for help from a Hispanic organization they refused but helped later on. All Gonzalo wanted was to Change the education for children of the future.…
HOW HISPANICS OVERCAME THE CHALLENGES The persistent inflow of Hispanic immigrants threatens to divide the United States Of America into two people, two cultures, and two different languages. Unlike the past immigrant groups, Mexicans and other Latinos have not not assimilated into mainstream U.S. culture, forming instead their own political and linguistic enclaves from Los Angeles to Miami and rejecting the Anglo protestant values that built the American Dream. The economic growth of Miami, led by early Cuban immigrants, made the city a magnet for migrants.…
Integration was mostly a response to pressure from the black community and an attempt to improve their image not only for the educational institutions like SMU but other organizations like the United Methodist Church. In the Church, it might have been expected that integration would mostly be encouraged because people were beginning to realize and believe that all humans were created by God. Instead, its motives are as much a question of image preservation and pressure. In the article, “Aspects of Racial Integration in the Methodist Church,” the structure of the Methodist Church was explained. While the Methodist Church was segregated, all of the churches were broken into conferences based on geographical distribution.…

An inclusive community is one that not only accepts but fully embraces people who are different from its majority population and one that uses these differences to improve itself. I believe the driving force behind such a community is open-mindedness: the ability of community members to respectfully challenge each other and their beliefs as well as to empathize with each others' struggles and successes. A group of people that are constantly communicating, respectfully debating, and in the process improving themselves are by definition a group that is inclusive. Many people in the United States live in bubbles, especially due to the increasing prevalence of all forms of media in the 21st century.…
Challenges with Diversity: Undoubtedly, diversity has played an important role in Marriott’s growth. However, it does become a challenge to organize such a diverse workforce while maintaining high morale. This dilemma is compounded with the attempt to keep employees interested and engaged in their daily tasks. Careful hiring: According to a recent article in Hotelsnewsnow.com, the President and Managing Director of the Middle East/Africa regions for Marriott International said that the biggest challenge faced by hotels, second to geopolitics, is managing their human capital.…
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re all on the same boat now.” Here, MLK Jr. talks about how all people should be treated equally, no matter what their culture is. This goes in line with the idea of multiculturalism, which is the idea of many cultures coming together to create a diverse community. Many contemporary writers used the idea of multiculturalism to emphasize what the lives of non-whites are actually like in America. Multicultural writers show that the American Dream is impossible for non-white Americans, there is racism towards non-whites in America, and there is a cultural conflict between traditional values and cultures and American values and cultures for American immigrants.…
Miami is a city made up of many backgrounds. Whether this comes from other countries or states, through its residents or tourists, South Beach best exemplifies this melting pot of cultures. One only has to visit this remarkable site once to stimulate the five human senses. As Lenny Bruce, the late comedian of the 1950’s, once said, “Miami Beach is where neon goes to…
