Strategic management is a set of managerial decisions and actions that determines the long-run performance of a corporation. While, the strategic decision making is the process of developing and putting into action choices that will influence the long-term future of the organization. These choices often involve major organizational changes and large resource commitments that are difficult to reverse once they are implemented. There are four modes/approaches of the Mintzberg’s Modes of Strategic Decision Making which is entrepreneurial mode, adaptive mode, planning mode and logical incrementalism mode. This mode using reactive solution rather than proactive. Reactive is reacting to the past rather than anticipating the future while proactive is acting before a situation becomes a source of confrontation or crisis. Adaptive mode is a continual adjustment of organizational goals and the process of formulating strategy is a reactive one instead of a proactive searching for new opportunities. In other words, adaptive mode is about changing plans according to the changing of environment. This mode done by adjust with the dynamic environment by at first makes a big plan, then breaks it into smaller plan. This mode have consequential characteristic of decision making because need to commit substantial resources and involving people at all level when change the plan from big to smaller plan. For example, this approach may be find to strategy formulation in a university and recreation where power is dispersed among university and where teaching or service are all seen as important goals.
