MIllion Dollar Listing New York Theory/Concept Paper
Million Dollar Listing New York, a reality TV show mainly focuses on three real estate brokers in New York City, Fredrik Eklund, Ryan Serhant, and Michael Lorber, as they represent as listing agents. Throughout the show, they have all gone through milestones as well as difficult times dealing with clients during the transaction, conflict plays a significant role as each of the three agents interacts and deals with each other. Little awareness of differing attitudes leads Fredrik and Michael to phase one, latent stage, as the two of them are starting to have different opinions in regards of the co-listing. The awareness need not to be grand and obvious, subtle actions and behaviors can be subjective and even play a significant role in causing the conflict. Before focusing on their opposing attitudes causing this conflict, we need to understand the existence of these opposing attitudes. What actualize one’s attitude are cultures and prior experiences of that person. “The complex and problematic relations between social movements and disorderly popular culture, involving distinctions of class and gender, ethnicity and race, roughness and respectability, are becoming central to the contemporary problematic” (Dirks, Eley, Ortner; 1994, p.331). In this case, Fredrik and Michael must have developed different culture and subculture as they grow up and interact with different people. Another source to have obtained opposing attitudes is through individual experience. As Fredrik and Michael gained different perceptions and went through what they have gone through, not only have they learned from their perceptions and interactions with other, they have also directed themselves in learning from mistakes; hence, proceeding to new …show more content…
Relational power stems from relationship among people. Michael, in this case, implies relational view of power. Because of the nature of relationship, power is placed with one person over the other. Being the son of New York’s well-known real estate agent, Howard Lorber, Michael obtains a great asset with relational power relies upon his father. However, this does not do him any good. “Most attention has thus been given to the relationship itself between the actors, while our knowledge about how factors internal to each partner company affect relational exchange is rather meager” (Rokkan, Haugland, 1967).
