Upon hearing the word mentor, an image is envisioned of a wise, old man with a white beard wearing a flowing robe. However, today, mentorship is defined as an individual who “encompasses both an emotional and a transitional relationship in which the experienced professional teaches, guides, and serves as a model for the less experienced person” (bully). A family member, a teacher, or even an older friend can all be mentors. Mentoring is a process of helping others heighten their skills and develop their confidence in order to establish their goals by providing individuals with support, by giving advice in times of need and assisting when necessary.
