History
The roots of Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) can be traced back to vocational guidance. It would be Frank Parsons who would lay the ground for counseling by opening the Boston Vocational Bureau. He would go on to create the role of vocational counselor, which would utilize the counseling process. Parsons would later outline the counseling process in Choosing a Vocation. He described the process as “listening and gathering information from the client regarding their personal interests and goals”. It would be in the coming years that we would see an emergence in marriage and family counseling, nondirective counseling, and a child guidance movement. As the helping professional, we must take pride in our profession and advocate for our clients. This could entail writing letters to our local state representative so that they are aware of the issues counselors are facing. It is also important that we join professional organizations so that we are aware of what is taking place in our profession.

Professional Development and Growth I currently work as an Academic Mentor for Sam Houston State University.
It is my hope that I can continue to build my skill level and continue to grow as a counselor. I would also hope to one day complete my RPT license and work as a play therapist on the side. Additionally, I would hope gain training in issue college students struggle with while pursuing a higher education.
Short and Long Term Goals
In the next two to three years, I hope to be in a Counselor Education Ph.D. program. As of right now I will be applying for programs beginning in 2018. I would also hope to have completed my LPC licensure. Within the next ten years, I would hope to have completed my Ph.D. Furthermore, I would hope to be at least an Assistant Director of an Academic Support
