This essay is going to show you the specific requirements to be a medical laboratory technician. On my personal experience, I’m currently attending southwest university and I need to complete several classes and two externships. My externships consist of 200 hours each in a clinical medical environment, 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, unpaid and supervised by a doctor or facility. You decide if you want to continue your education to pursue higher levels. This may sound rude but as humans we are destined to get sick and die. If you think about it, this is a permanent job because we need medicine and doctors. Everyday someone dies and a new baby is born. We need to know how they died and we need to practice tests to see if there something wrong with the newborn. You will never have to worry about cutting hours or unpaid overtime. On the other hand, working with human fluids could be potentially dangerous; you need to use the proper equipment to protect yourself from getting any viruses in your system. Because hospitals are always open, you must work night shifts and weekends, we can’t control when emergencies happens so you will be working during holidays and important dates in your life, such as birthdays, anniversaries and funerals.
The salary of a medical lab technician depends on the area and the experience of the person. According to researches, a medical lab technician salary is $37,000-$40,000 per year, which means approximately $21.00 per hour. Here in El Paso the minimum wage for a lab technician is $12-$15 per hour.
