Mayo Clinic is saying several different genes are involved in Autism. They say this Rett syndrome or a fragile x chromosome. Mayo is saying that the environmental aspect is still being researched, but the genetic problems could lead to some environmental problems for the child. These two steps are developmental screening and comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. The developmental screening is a test to tell if the child is learning the basic skills when they should, and the doctor will ask question to the parents, or play with the child to see how they act. The comprehensive evaluation is done when the primary doctor refers the patient to a specialist like a developmental pediatrician, child neurologist, child psychologist or psychiatrist. This is done to insure that the diagnosis for the child is correct. The specialist has the child under go many test to see whether the child is autistic. These test are hearing, vision, genetic, neurological, and other medical tests that the specialist feels are needed to ensure the correct diagnosis. The Mayo Clinic says for the child to meet the criteria for autism the child has to have multiple situations with social and emotional, nonverbal communication behaviors, and developing relationships. The Mayo Clinic also states that the child must have two of the following restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior to qualify for the diagnosis. The behaviors that the child could have are odd or repetitive motor movements, insistence on sameness, interest in objects or topics that are abnormal, and extra sensitivity or a lack of sensitivity to sensory
