Intro: For years the media has expressed that the root of extreme school shootings, violent stabbings, and brutal mass murder is violent media. However, violent media does not correlate with the violent crime rate or the murder rate. In fact, the FBI’s violent crime statistics have dropped by 50% from 1992 to 2011, and the murder rate decreased by 54% from the same years. Notice that violent video games have been around since the late eighties and have only been increasing in violent and realistic content since then. It is very clear, violent media has little to no correlation with violent crimes. So, if violent media isn’t the cause of violent crimes, what is? Well, there are three fundamental factors that play into the development of these homicidal and suicidal behaviours. Body 1) The first factor is the environment the criminal was raised in. Again, it is not the violent media in the home gradually “desensitizing” every viewer and turning them into killing monsters. Drug abuse, lack of parental support, peer pressure, and severe abuse could all be factors that may lead up to a mass shooting. Violent media does not affect the leadup to these killings, and it makes sense because if a family has enough money to buy an expensive television, that means they are at least semi- financially stable and would probably not be in a position to take mind altering drugs or commit a violent crime. So, out of all of these environmental factors, violent media has little to no effect on the leadup to a shooting. Body 2) The second factor is inadequate education. Many think that mass shootings are caused by angry guns who just get up and shoot people, or by violent media turning youth into murderers. However, the REAL cause is far worse: Psychotropic and psychiatric drugs. According to Mike Adams from Natural News, these drugs have caused “Nearly every mass shooting incident in the last twenty years” (Adams). He goes on to list more than 40 shootings and what psychotropic drug they were on, and in almost every single case, they were on drugs prescribed by a doctor. The prescribed drugs Ritalin, Zoloft and Prozac all appeared very frequently on this list. If you look into these drugs, they state VERY CLEARLY that side effects include “Thoughts of hurting yourself or others, unusual behavior” and “seeing or hearing things that are not there” among many others. How could we have missed that? The very drug companies themselves understand these side effects and what they cause. This leaves unanswered questions like, “How could something with such obvious, horrible side effects, be prescribed to millions of children, youth, and adults across the American continent without a second thought? Why hasn’t the media picked up on this yet? Why are doctors still prescribing these drugs?” and “Is everyone taking these drugs slowly becoming a killer? Well, that’s an essay for another day.
