In her essay, “ The More You Subtract, the More You Add,” Jean Kilbourne discusses how society’s ideal masculinity is that men cannot show their feminine side and they must be tough and strong. According to Jean Kilbourne, “ When men are advertised they generally are bigger, stronger, more powerful. At an early age young boys get the message that talking, communication is seen as a weakness in men often. Jean is also saying that young men should not have a feminine side”(Jean Kilbourne). As Jean Kilbourne said in her video Killing us Softly 4 about that men should not show their feminine side means that men should be emotionally distant and tough. After watching Killing us Softly 4 I have come to realize that young boys follow these ideals of masculinity because of society and how society thinks men should act. In the Polo Blue by Ralph Lauren the model’s expression is firm, looking afar (away from the camera). His position is right in the center of the page. In little words it says “ The Men’s Fragrance” by Ralph Lauren. On the back it shows the Fragrance and sail boats in the background. The BPI Sports and the Polo Blue show how men are emotionally distant because according to Jean Kilbourne, “ men’s ads show men’s dignity and their strength. Kilbourne also mentions that men are too afraid to speak out for women and that men are not allowed to show their feminine side meaning they cannot show their emotions” (
