Maryland Shock Trauma Center Internship Paper

During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.
I remember a patient coming in with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was a young adult, probably in her twenties. When she came in she was unconscious and the physician on duty had to perform surgery to remove the bullet. The patient had lost a lot of blood so I had to go to the blood bank to get blood for the patient. Knowing this was a serious situation, I rushed to the blood bank to retrieve the blood and rushed back so that it would be available for the doctor. After the blood was present, the doctor was able to successfully perform surgery on the patient and save her life. From this experience, I learned so much and I believe that what I have learned will make me a great addition to your institution. The first thing I learned is the significance of time. If I had inefficiently used my time when retrieving the blood, I believe that it would result in a significant consequence in the surgery and could have potentially caused someone their life. Time is very important and I will ensure you that I will be able to complete all the required tasks of this internship position in a timely manner. The second thing I gained from the Shock Trauma Center is the importance of completing required tasks. As I said before, volunteers have to restock the supplies in the bays and provide warm socks and blankets to new patients. These tasks aid in helping the doctor perform his/her job in a timely manner. Not properly restocking the bays can lead to the delay of the doctor’s duties and subsequently can determine whether a patient survives or not. I realized that the tasks I performed provided the basis for the doctor to work from. These two skills I gained from the STC will follow me in any situation I am placed in. I was able to contribute to the process of saving someone’s life and

I am a hard worker that will strive to help researchers meet all the goals that this organization hopes to accomplish. The skills and experience that I have described before will help me to do each task that is required of an intern. I am specifically applying as an intern to this organization because I enjoy working with children and I feel that this organization is serving the public. The GNC, Growth and Nutrition Clinic, is gathering information that can be used to provide proper treatment to children that are having developmental problems and to prevent other families from being in situations where the child is not getting the nutrition and care needed to grow normally. I want to be a part of this research that will aid other people because a job is much more gratifying when you know that you have helped

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

As a student eager to get out of the classroom and experience working in the mental health field, as well as interact with those suffering from mental illness, an internship was the logical next step to gain this type of knowledge. Although this comes with its natural feelings of anxiety and inadequacy, the knowledge and life skills I’ve gained through this experience has helped me grow as a person, has made me feel more prepared to help those struggling, and has given me the skills to overcome such negative feelings in the future. My internship was with Crawford County Human Services, specifically spending my time with the Blended Case Managers (BCM), and for a small amount of my internship, the Family Case Managers (FCM). For a brief…

My interest towards attending Mercer University’s Physician Assistant is largely due to the emphasis the University puts on service to humankind through service learning and integrating volunteering. Being a founding institution that ingrains service to humanity entirely into its culture and academics, there is no doubt that Mercer would provide me with an exceptional opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills of a Physician Assistant providing whole person care to members of the community. Having worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in an underserved community, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, for some time now, I thoroughly understand how important providing effective care to those in need really is. During my experience I witnessed the appalling living conditions that many patients were surrounded by and how difficult accessing healthcare service was for them, thus enforcing medical illnesses to be even more likely to occur among them. I have personally observed how appreciative and grateful many of the patients and the families of the patients were when…

After about a month, the head physical therapist asked me to transition to a physical therapist aide. I was excited about the transition, because it is my passion to assist patients. During each shift, I spent six hours assisting approximately 15 patients in their treatments and answering any questions related to their treatments. As an intern, I initially took the initiative to talk to patients and sympathized with their condition.…

To be honest, I might have either added or changed my field of passion from this human services program. Originally, I wanted to get into the mental health field of human services/social work and possibly work in a hospital to care the patients. Instead, I might deal more with children (ages 16 years old and below) as examples from my experiences from my last two internships. As for how I got to this current position, it was from selecting internships between semesters. When ever a clinic I wanted to internship, I had to resort to my backup locations when ever a clinic is not looking or interested in an intern or got no response from them at all.…

I learned about the work involved before seeing a patient including checking for insurance eligibility and prescription use. I learned how to check patient 's vital signs and how to take notes during a medical appointment and upload those notes into patients ' health records. I was able to form strong bonds with the patients over the course of my internship which I particularly enjoyed. My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication.
