Martin Luther King Jr. fought for what he believed in and got punished for it. Although this did not deter his determination, he continued to fight for what is right while in jail. He makes some very insightful statements. He says, “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly” (Letter from Birmingham City Jail). With colored people not having the same rights as white people, this affected everyone. With this, he also says, “privileged groups seldom give up their privileges” (Letter from Birmingham City Jail). Martin Luther King Jr. fought very hard for something he strongly believed in. MLK fought for himself as well as many others around him. He benefits from helping others. Letter from Birmingham City Jail teaches that if you stand up for what you believe in, things can change. People can make a difference. There is injustice all over the world. Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what he believed and eventually made America a better place. When it comes to people of poverty, they do not have very much. The one thing they can have is the belief in God to guide them in the right direction. God has a plan for every one of his followers. The Option for the Poor Arises from Faith in Christ is a reading by Gustavo Gutierrez who believes poverty is an injustice. He talks about how believing in God can give hope to people of poverty. He says, “Hope is, in the first place, a gift from God. Accepting that gift opens followers of Jesus to the future and to trust” (The Option for the Poor Arises from Faith in Christ). While hope is extremely important, he goes on to talk about having a voice and speaking out. Without hope, the poor do not have a voice. Gutierrez suggest that people should help the poor find their voice. Poor people need to have a voice and realize they can become something. A rich person is not able to speak out for one in poverty because they do not understand what they are going through. It is the poor’s job to speak for the “’insignificant’ and oppressed”. We should become friends with the poor and the poor should become friends with each other to promote equality. When there is no friendship, there is no
