It has been two years since Armpit has been released from Camp Green Lake Juvenile Correctional Facility, and he is trying to get his life back together. Upon returning home, he set himself five goals:

1. Graduate from high school.
2. Get a job.
3. Save his money.
4. Avoid Situations that might turn violent.
5. Lose the name Armpit.

His friend from Camp Green lake, X-ray, however, has a different plan. X-ray insists he invests his $600 he saved up from his job to "make the big bucks" scalping tickets. He gets the best of Armpit and he gives up the money. This leads to a crime investigation, a music concert, a murder attempt, and the best day of a little girls life.

Small Steps takes place on the same timeline as Louis Sachar's Holes. The main character of Holes, Stanly Yelnats, is barely mentioned. Instead, we have four main characters, Armpit and X-Ray, two minor characters from Holes that both were released from Camp Green Lake. Armpit is focused on turning his life around, but X-ray still hasn't learned his lesson and ends up dragging Armpit along with him. Ginny is a little girl with cerebral palsy, which causes her to stutter, and have seizures occasionally. Armpit and Ginny were friends as soon as they met. They helped each other. Armpit helped her and her parents, and Ginny gave Armpit's life meaning. The last main character is Kaira DeLeon. She is a well know pop star. She was on tour is Austin, where she met Armpit and Ginny. She hates her stepdad, Jerome, who controls what she does and what she
