Let America Be America Again By Langston Hughes Essay

The American dream is something common to all people, and it is viewed differently to all Americans. The American dream is usually different from your neighbor’s or some common American but, there are similar threads between every dream ever thought; through working hard for your country, no matter class, race, or religion, one can achieve the great success of the American Dream. All of the conflicts from believing this dream determine the life you wish to improve upon and so the dream will always stand for the same thoughts of thousands of people---freedom. Langston Hughes lived in a time of racial segregation. Although he grew up in the North Hughes wanted the “American Dream” just like everyone else and even though he was free, he did not receive all of the same rights as the white men. So Hughes started writing poetry, spoke speeches, went into some of the Civil Rights movements. But he is the most famous for his poetry, in the poem Let America Be America Again, Hughes writes how he wants the American dream but America is not letting him have the American dream he believes it to be, “There’s never been equality for me, No freedom …show more content…
McCain went to the Naval Academy in collage but soon was dispatched to Vietnam. While in Vietnam he was tortured as a prisoner of war until released in 1973. Soon after, he served as a Republican Congressman and Senator from Arizona, he had his own idea of the American Dream in his A Cause Greater Than Self speech, “the patriot must not just accept, but in his or her own way protect the ideals that gave birth to our country…honors the duties, loyalties, the inspirations.” (Ph. 7) In his idea of the American Dream, he believes that in order to get to what you want, you need to work hard and support your country to achieve success, and this is probably his idea of the American Dream because of all that he has been through in his tough times in the Vietnam
