In Chapter Four of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie, the author describes how some of the other veteran teachers in his education classes expressed their views on the disconnect between education theory and classroom reality. One such example of this disconnect is the theory of differentiated instruction. I have learned a lot about differentiated instruction in my Foundations Block classes this semester, since I had not previously heard of the concept. In theory, this practice is a great way to tailor instruction to each student’s individual needs, as well as encourage learning and exploration.…
In the video, Linda Hammond, stated students, “…need opportunities that are well-structured to allow them to learn those skills and to try different aspects of it.” This was very accurate. Data collected from the formative assessment showed several areas that students did not have critical background knowledge. Students need opportunities in which they will be able to practice the skills they are lacking. Warm up class activities will focus on the skills students are lacking on a daily basis maximizing student learning opportunities.…
Nevada Community School District (early kindergarten) 1. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher. The most important ability is being able to understand and adapt to the individual needs of each for of the students in the classroom. As an educator, it is crucial to develop a bond with each child and understand the student’s family, cultural background, and interests.…
However, there are a couple of areas where I feel my perspective was altered due to the material of the course. One such area is team dynamics and communication. With regards to team dynamics, Berkun’s (2008) book completely changed my perspective with regards to the value of informal hallway interaction. Previously I did not view this as necessary or valuable, but after reading his insights I understand the strategic value of these interactions.…
Research has shown that schools are actively seeking ways to better educate 21st century students and boost school performance. However, this cannot be accomplished without the support and service of faculty and staff. Strategies, as the skills listed keep emphasizing, will work if created within a learning community/organization. Demonstrating the skills in FELE Competency 1-02 will foster genuine learning opportunities for both faculty/staff and students. Genuine because faculty/staff will be challenged to tap into their inner potentials and resources.…
1) How will the Washington Center Seminar contribute to achieving your academic, career and personal goals? The Washington Center Seminar will contribute to achieving my academic goals because as a student because I learned one of the best ways to become better is to challenge myself. I love being challenged because it gives me the opportunity to learn something new and become more open minded. It contributes to my career because as a future physician I should know a thing or two about politics. And it contributes to my personal goals because as a person who is comfortable in my surrounding and dislike change, attending this trip will expose me to somewhere beside Miami, Florida.…
So staying in the dorms was an interesting opportunity to really test my newfound patience. I also learned many valuable life lessons and received an abundance of helpful advice at SouthWestern Michigan College. Being proactive instead of reactive was one of the best sayings I ever heard in Business 201 – Principles of Management with Stacey Horner. This is one of the best classes I could recommend to anyone, reading “Who Moved My Cheese” is what in fact inspired me. Several other helpful classes I would recommend are; Educational Exploration, Intro to Computer Technology, Intro to Meetings and Events, Professionalism Workshop, Business Law I, Micro and Macro Economics, Human Resource Management, and Two Dimensional Design.…
Healthcare administration graduates have many possible choices for what healthcare setting to pursue a career, including hospitals and large medical complex facilities such as medical supply, pharmaceutical companies, clinics, health insurance businesses, government agencies, research facilities, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes. I would utilize this service again because it was an informative workshop. I learned a lot from the speakers and I would attend if there is another one in the future. One of the service I think should be offered to UCF students is a mentorship program. I believe that it should be mandatory for every student to find a mentor in their field of study before graduation.…
I completed my field experience hours at Volusia Pines Elementary School in Lake Helen Florida. I was able to work with my nephew’s first grade teacher, Mrs. Erica Stevens. Altogether I spent 16 hours with Mrs. Stevens and her students. Mrs. Stevens has worked at Volusia Pines Elementary School for eight years. Her class is a general education class with seventeen students, of the seventeen students nine are girls and eight are boys.…
In this chapter it mainly explains metacognitive, learning strategies, problem solving, and teaching to transfer. The chapter begins by explaining the three metacognitive skills that are used to help with thinking and learning. The skills are planning, evaluating, and monitoring. Planning can help with strategies on how to do something and how to begin an assignment. The next skill, monitoring, helps with know what progress you are at on an assignment.…
In an effort to expand my educational library, I will read effective instructional guides such as, High-Impact Instruction by Jim Knight. Furthermore, by enriching my reading choices I will begin to expand my knowledge in key areas of instruction and support. The second strategy that I will be using to grow in the area of instructional resource is by attending trainings and webinars that focus solely on bettering instruction in my school. As our students evolve into 21st century learners, our instructional models and methods must evolve as well. It is my belief that by attending new trainings and webinars I can learn new resources that will allow me to train my staff members and empower them to master their…
For the lesson plan modification assignment I chose the standard, LAFS.3.RL.1.3; describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. My objective is for the student to be able to listen to information about character traits and feelings, and connect them to individuals and events in the story. Students will be able to pull details and events from the read aloud and complete the chart with specific details, characters, and feelings or character traits. Prior to beginning the lesson I would provide each English Language Learner with the modified character trait list. This list provides the students with a cognate from their native language as suggested…
Learning theories emphasized that teacher must use many ways to maximize the learning and retention (Aliakbari, Parvin, Heidari, & Haghani, 2015). Therefore, many learning activities such as case studies, group discussion, assignments, mandated reviews, and resources for the faculty and students were included in the learning module. For the faculty resources, there were PowerPoints, test banks, diagrams, videos, calendars, course planning templates, concept-based approach, etc. were includes. For student resource section, there were sample questions, an audio glossary for each chapter, key points post each chapter in a printable form is available. Leaning modules were developed for all the concepts identified.…
Cubing is the next instructional strategy that I chose. The reasoning behind this is because I tried to choose instructional strategies that I am not familiar with. After conducting research, I found that cubing is an instructional strategy that is used to encourage students to consider a concept from a variety of different viewpoints. A cube is a six-sided figure. This strategy calls for a cube to be used, which requires a teacher to have a different activity on each side of the cube. Cubing activities can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups.…
Walk around the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and you will find students who have ditched lectures and notecards to spend their time outside of the classroom. With over 40 service learning courses offered this fall, UW-Madison allows students an alternative way to learn and bring resources to the surrounding community. These classes also have shown to create a new learning environment that provides important experience and aids students’ mental health.…
