In James Howe’s novel, The Misfits, Bobby evolves from as insecure follower to a strong leader because of his realization that even if he has blocked out the names, others need his help. Early in the novel, when Bobby gets to school, he is surprised to see: “ Tuesday morning, we get to school, and what do we find scrawled in big ugly marker on Joe's locker but the word FAGOT…’Okay f-a-i-r-y,’ Kevin retorts with an evil grin.
