As a teacher, we take on many different roles. Our roles vary from being the classroom teacher, to a nurse, to a counselor, and most importantly, being a leader. Even though we are in front of children and students for a whole day, we are an example to these students. More importantly, we need to work on being a leader for our school and our co-workers. To become a leader, we need development on the expertise and skills to help us reach the leader role. When No Child Left Behind (NCLB), was put in place, leadership development has been at the top of the agenda for many schools. This is due to the fact that in the past, teachers have been expected to be led, rather than to lead projects themselves (Jones, Neumann, & Webb, 2004).

There are many different areas that they work on managing. One of the areas is attention. As a teacher, we need to have the attention of our students. As a leader, we need to have the attention of the ones that we are leading. The second area is meaning. When you can relate to a students by having a shared experience, it helps the student more than likely succeed in your classroom. As a leader, it helps others to see that you once were where they are now. The last two areas is trust and self. These two areas go together. As a leader, you need to show others that you have integrity, someone of good character, and that they can trust you.
