Immigrants are a well known topic, but more than often immigrants are laughed at. An immigrant is a person that comes to live in a new place that is foreign to them. Immigration started way before 1965 and it still happens to this day, at first there was not many people coming to America but then it sky rocketed. Tan learns from her mother's English that people pretend to not understand by not listening with her accent, it is her second internal language and passion.
People pretend to not understand, what this basically means is that people who have a language barrier are sometimes belittled. They are made fun of and just used. People use other people at their own expense. "People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants …show more content…
Tan also uses the words "limited English" (pg. 101) which in Laymen's terms means that Tan's mother could not speak or is not capable of much English, which would imply limiting her language skills. When there is a limited language skills there would not be any way to communicate with anyone. A person could not be labeled with the term limited English because that would imply that they can not speak at all. Something that is broken can be fixed but can not be used to describe someone who has a language barrier. The definition of language skills is listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening is just paying attention to the person who is talking which is capable by anyone. Speaking is just moving vocal chords and letting air come out, which turn into words, which develops into language. Reading is seeing words on paper and reading them out loud or in the brain. "Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery"( Tan 101). What this quote means is that even though her mother's English is not so well it is her mother's tongue. When her mother speaks she includes lots of detail. The way the mother speaks is that she uses such vivid, detailed explanation when she talks. Language means the way people speak whether it is from a different country or a different city. Language is way to describe how someone brings in detail to what they are describing. Description is very important to language to show what is trying to be explained. The way words can be described is incredible. There can be big details to
describe one thing. Imagery is used when Tan's mother speaks even though it is not the best she still tries to put detail into it, when most people can not accomplish that. When there is a language barrier it can be difficult to communicate but there is resources available. A resource that is always available is a translator which is offered in hospitals and almost everywhere
