Lake Mungo is one of Australia 's richest archaeological, historical, cultural and scientific sites, providing evidence of human habitation in the area, as much as 50,000 years old, doubling the anthological history of Australia. The discovery of human remains records some of the earliest evidence of burial rituals including the first cremation and the world 's oldest ochre burial. Evidence also exists for the earliest Homo sapiens outside of Africa. Lake Mungo contains the world 's largest collection of fossilized human footprints. Evidence of diet, lifestyle and human adaptation to the changes in environment and climate lay amongst the lunettes at Lake Mungo.…
Dear Coach Williams, I have been a year long journey to the Tundra biome. It is very cold here and snows majority of the time. Summers bring wildflowers, but other than that it is mostly snow. This biome is found in the Arctic and has absolutely no trees and it does not get much rain here either. There is a lot of animals here: sheep, mountain goats, birds, grey wolves, polar bears, and very few other species.…
A series of small waves pressed the sail boat against the alge dock as his cold and cracked hands desperately yanked on the rope in an effort to raise the sails. Dark clouds had moved in the night before and had stayed overnight providing a refreshing sprinkle of rain every now and then. He looked out over the vast plain of unsettled water and saw one individual white cap rise up among the rest only to be pushed back down. Due to the lack of sunlight the frigid water appeared black and lifeless but he knew that below it was a complex community of different species. He then bent over the side of the boat and reached for its securing ropes.…
A ferocious barking woke me up from a dead sleep, momentarily confused, I got my wits about me and realized it was Yukon. Now, anyone who has dogs knows they have different barks for different reasons. Well, this was Yukon's serious "I mean business!"…
“Some people believe it is the ghosts of the coal miners, but no one knows for sure. My cousin went was exploring up there and got lost. They looked for months for him, but never found any trace of him. There are other people missing and were never found. The sheriff has a basket full of excuses about what happened.…

The sky is dark, damp, and warm, the slight red undertones are glowing through the clouds. I never expected something like this to happen in my short lifetime, Mauna Loa was erupting for the first time in twenty-five years. I watched as the ash rained down on the roofs of nearby houses, coating the entire town in what could have been perceived as warm, black snow. I felt my heart rise into my throat, causing me to choke out a dry sob. I was twenty-one, I finally had a house, and now I was going to die in this massive storm of lava and rubble.…
This picture expresses every single one of my family member’s personality. This picture was taken at Lake Latoka in Minnesota. We had such a great time there, although my Grandma sold our cabin a couple years ago. I still remember the crisp waves lapping up against the dock. The sound was so lulling and peaceful that you didn’t have trouble getting to sleep.…
It’s 7.02pm as I walk along the wooden boardwalk. It’s starting to get darker. I can see the orange sunset fading into a pitch black sky but before I can really admire it, I hear creaking. I’m no longer alone. As I turn, I see a man in all black directly behind me.…
When I was about 3 years old, I can remember my Grandparents lake house in Houston, Texas. My parents and I lived there until my grandparents moved into the country 2 hours outside Houston. Before moving, I can remember my mother taking me out to the lake to feed the ducks and always telling me I can’t swim in the lake because it’s too dirty. I remember going into the kitchen to get juice and spilled it everywhere and was found cleaning my mess while cursing because I thought saying “Shit” and “God Damnit” would magically clean the mess. I would grab a stick of butter and sit 3 inches from the television while watching the Teletubbies.…
We have examined many wonderful stories throughout the course of this year, but my favorite from this year was Once More to the Lake by E.B. White. Magnificently, it encompasses the story of a father sharing one of his greatest childhood memories with his son. As a boy, the father had ventured with his family to the state of Maine, where they spent the month of August living next to a lake. Although there were a couple incidents on his original trip, the father had always been drawn to the peacefulness of the lake and the fantastic memories which were linked to the place. However, the story focused more exclusively on the realization of the father, where he pictured himself as his father and his son as him.…
I was five when I swam out into Lake Ramsey. The water was a warm brown, as with most water in Louisiana. This was was not the first time I had gone to Ramsey, but this time, it was for a specific purpose. I was going to learn how to ski and my grandfather was going to teach me. This would be the start of the lessons he, as my mentor, would teach me.…
I awoke on the couch the morning at the lake with a cool breeze coming through the house. The fire place has just about burned out with only a small bed of hot coals remaining from a fire the night before. I watched as they flickered and crackled slowly changing color as they begin to change to ash. Above the fire place is a trophy deer mounted with an old hunting rifle right below it. It was a beautiful head piece which had ten points in total five on each side making it almost a perfect rack.…
Wakeboarding Strapped in floating helplessly in the water I wondered what is going to happen. The engine starts and I start to get nervous with jitters, the same question repeating in my mind what is going to happen.” It was my first time attempting to wakeboard. I had learned how to kneeboard years before and loved to tube but the wakeboard was different. It needed talent not something you could just do.…
The sunrise made the water glisten and the birds began to fly over the water peacefully. The sound of the birds chirping and the breeze coming off the water were so gentle and gave us a sense of…
