On the far eastern side of Russia, there is a 270,000-kilometer peninsula that houses all the volcanos in Russia called the Kamchatka Peninsula. Kamchatka, like Russia, has extremely cold winters and cold summers and has a population of approximately 200,000 people. There are abundant amounts of wildlife such as certain birds and brown bears that do surprisingly well considering that there are volcanos constantly erupting. People that travel to Kamchatka
Kamchatka was originally discovered in 1697 by Vladimir Atlasov, a traveler. He built a small yet popular trading camp that pushed out the natives. It was officially discovered in 1740 when the famous marine explorer, Vitus Y. Bering, chose one of the bays on the peninsula as a base for sailing across the Pacific Ocean. Seventy-five percent of the worlds volcanos exist in the ring of fire. The most active part of the ring of fire is the western side. This includes the Kamchatka Peninsula, Japan, and New Zealand. It is where the plate boundaries react and move around each other, grinding and sliding past each other. Kamchatka is on a small plate called the Okhotsk Block.
