Julia Carolyn McWilliams was born in Pasadena California on August 15th 1912 and was the eldest of three children. Julia’s father John McWilliams Jr. was a Princeton graduate, class of 1901 and her mother, Julia Carolyn (Weston) McWilliams, of Smith College class of 1900, a paper company heiress whose father Byron Curtis Weston, served as a lieutenant governor and was the founder of Weston Paper Co. In 1963 she appeared on a television panel show named “ I’ve been Reading” while promoting her cookbook and began a half hour cooking show named “The French Chef,” which was even more successful than her book. She had camera presence, good humor, knowledge and a knack for teaching. Julia prepared “An omelet on air” for her first television appearance while promoting her book, which received an enthusiastic response from the public. Julia had appeared on set with some eggs, a whisk and a copper bowl, where she beat some egg whites to liven up the conversation. Julia earned $50 a show, which was raised to $200 plus expenses. The show generated 27 letters and countless phone calls. She was recognized in 1965 with the George Foster Peabody award and in 1966 with an Emmy Award for “Achievement in Educational Television”. Julia became the first educational television personality to ever receive an Emmy in open competition. “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” changed the way Americans viewed and related to cooking forever and they acknowledged her as a local celebrity. “The French Chef” was aired on 96 stations across America and ran from February 11th 1963 to 1973, and was one of the first American cooking shows. Julia made regular appearances on the show “Good Morning America" throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. Mastering the Art of French Cooking was named book-of-the-month, and over 12,000 copies were distributed and the hype has never significantly died down. 1,600,000 copies had been printed to date, and in September 2009, following the release of the Sony film Julie & Julia the book sold over 300,000 copies in only the first month.
