Cold War Essay The journey to the Cold War begin after Germany's first attempt at trying to take over the world, World War One. After this event, the leaders of the free world came to get her in order to create the treaty of Versailles. The treaty of Versailles was intended to punish the Germans. Over 80% of the topics discussed in the treaty were about that punishment. Eventually, Hitler gained power in Germany. Through his actions he became like a savior to Germany. He nationalized the army, redid the transportation system, and even restored the economy. However they were still unhappy about the treaty of Versailles. On the contrary, East Berlin was still struggling due to the Soviet Union taking their resources. Joseph Stalin went into action when he realized the huge contrast between West Berlin and East Berlin. Stalin wanted the western allies to leave West Berlin. On April 1,1948, the Soviet military government in Berlin landed a blockade of the allied areas of the city. For ten months over two million tons of supplies were airlifted to the blockaded city. Yasir Arafat was the leader of PLO. They used extreme tactics. The murdered, hijacked, and even bombed. Athletes were killed and taken hostage in September 1972 when the Palestinian guerrillas attacked at Munich Olympics. The hostages were killed in an airport during an attempt at a rescue. Arab states met in October of 1974 and decided the PLO should take responsibility. By 1976 the PLO had established itself enough to take part in a United Nations debate. In 1980 the organization split into factions. In 1994 the leader of PLO won the novel peace prize. The next year he was elected president of Palestine National Council.
Six Day War: June 5, 1967
A 1967 a blockade was ordered on the Golf of Aqaba by General Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt. General Moshe Dayan ordered a pre-emptive attack. In June 1967 Israeli Air Force bombed several airfields. In addition Egyptian tanks were destroyed. Israeli army came to the Suez Canal on June 7th. Within three days Israelis captures Golan Heights and land in Syria. The six day war gave them control over the West Bank of Jordan and the Arabs who lived there. It reopened the gulf of Aqaba.
