Darry shows how sorry he is to Pony when he slaps him, even though he doesn’t reveal it at first. For example, after Darry slaps Ponyboy, he says “Ponyboy,” in a sad way, like he doesn’t mean to hurt Ponyboy. Although Ponyboy doesn’t realize it for a period of time, Darry is actually concerned about Ponyboy’s safety and education. In the book, Darry shows how worried he was by always trying to stop Ponyboy from doing anything dangerous or would get him in trouble. In the novel, Darry tries to talk Pony into not being a part of the rumble, because he lost a lot of weight and wasn’t in good shape due to his injuries from the church fire. Because of Ponyboy’s condition, Darry thinks that Pony wasn’t going to fight so well and get beaten up at the rumble. This shows how much Darry loves Ponyboy and doesn’t want to lose
