Van Eyck was very successful at painting both secular and religious topics which brought him several commissions by many rich individuals. He reached a point in his career where he had proven his success and was able to paint whenever he wanted ensuring that his talent was shown at every stage of his painting. He was also very successful at the use of oil which he mastered, oil usually takes some time to dry so he used this to perfect his style and every detail of his paintings. Due to this he was able to blend and mix different layers of paint making his surface materials and colors stand out. He was also very successful at using light to emphasize color. He was extremely talented in the use of oil, perfectly proven by his work in the painting. Oil was popularly used more in the North than any other part. He uses several methods in the completion of his painting. Oil takes some time to dry, so van Eyck took advantage of this to mix colors and work wet-on-wet to achieve the texture effects in several parts of the painting. He uses gold leafs, actual gold, in the rays coming from the window joining the dove that is headed towards Mary. Gold paint is used in Gabriel clothes, not gold leaf, which shows the intention of van Eyck making the trip of the doe more important and represent a significant event. The painting all around has happy colors, he didn’t want to show any darkness in a painting that represented such an important story. The painting has deep religious context, something that doesn’t come up as a surprise considering that it represents the Northern Renaissance which mainly portrayed religious images (Ammot)(T.).
