This story takes place during a time in history referred to as “The Dirty Wars.” The Dirty Wars took place when Isabel Peron was removed from office and replaced with Lieutenant General Jorge Rafael Videla sometime in the 70’s. just to give a quick synopsis these wars pretty much occurred, because there were certain political rules that Lieutenant General Jorge Rafael Videla set for this country, but of course as with any government there are people who aren’t always in agreeance with this. He found heinous ways to “handle” this which was by building detention centers, which were something like concentration camps where those people that opposed his commands were torture, kidnaped or mysteriously disappeared from their homes and ultimately killed. He murdered thousands of innocent people. Isabel Perón was deposed, a three-man military junta filled the presidency with Lieut. Gen. Jorge Rafaél Videla. Beto and Chiquita have to tread softly, because they are in the midst of The Dirty war; there is that fear of being captured and killed. At first read I thought that Chiquita was dreaming but she in fact was not, Beto had actually been captured and killed by the Junta. She herself also was captured by the Junta, where they threaten to beat and torture her. These are just some of the things that the citizens of Argentina were subjected to, because of the new reign of Lieutenant General Jorge Rafael Videla and his new political views on the way that the Argentine government should have been ran. These are all of the struggles that the Argentine people had to face due to this war, in addition to their loved ones being taken away from them.
