Roly Pollie Party; How Different Types of Music Impact Pill Bugs Behavior In our experiment, my partner and I came up with the hypothesis that the vibrations of different kinds of music would affect the behavior of pill bugs. Pill bugs, also know as Roly Pollies, are small, black, terrestrial crustaceans, that roll up to protect themselves from predators. Pill bugs can't hear, but they can sense the vibrations from the sounds. This lead my partner and I to see how the vibrations from the sound would impact the behavior of the Roly Pollies.…
They were fed rabbit blood that was kept at a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature was maintained because the blood was immersed in a water bath that circulated. The membrane that was used for the blood to be sucked through was a parafilm-membrane. The selected bugs were kept at a controlled humidity and temperature. These bugs were tested at different stages of life as listed: species of both male and female adults and nymphs that were at third and fourth phase of molting.…
Did research on what males and females look like. We observed the frozen flies. On the first week we used fly nap as an anesthetic for the flies and waiting for them to fall asleep. We sexed the flies and put 10 male and 10 female into a tube.…
Pill bugs name is woodlouse. Climate change will have an effect on animals, plants, and humans. With climate change rising many animals are going to get extinct in the future. Pill bugs are small animals that can live under rocks, and when you catch one they always tend to rolled up into a small ball. Their body temperature has to match with the environment that they live on.…
It was noted that the presence or absence of predators doesn't seem to have any affect on the plant survivorship, but increase in vapor pressure results in a greater survivorship. She therefore came to the conclusion that the stability of mutualisms can in fact be affected by some extrinsic factors. This proves that just because the yucca-yucca moth relationship exists doesn't mean that their interaction guarantees their survival. In some cases their existence is also hindered by their relationship if it is obligate. She suggests future long-term research into a wider variety of extrinsic sources and larger geographic areas, in order to fully understand the evolution of the symbiosis.…
3. The earthworm has a segmented body with a mouth at the anterior end and an anus at the posterior end. It has a smooth, purple dorsal side and a rough, yellow ventral side with setae. Two sperm grooves run along the body from segment 15 (where sperm ducts are also located) to the clitellum, which looks like a tube surrounding the earthworm’s body and is closer to the anterior end. 4.…
Determining the affects of natural selection on gall fly (Eurosta) larvae from different predators Ariel O’Neil Biology 1020H Abstract This lab was done with the objective of determining if directional selection causes early larvae death in the gall fly. By first examining the parasitoid wasp and birds predatory actions we can hypothesize and predict the smaller galls will be most likely to survive directional selection.…
The fruit flies does deal with dominant vs. recessive for the wing traits. Complete dominance occurs when the dominant allele complete cover (hide) the recessive allele. This occurs to the wing traits in the fruit flies. Normal wings are dominant over vestigial wing and base on the data, the female that carries the vestigial wing did not create any F1 generation of vestigial traits. This occurs because the male has normal wing so when the two parent meet; the dominant normal wing in the male completely cover up the recessive vestigial wing in the female traits.…
Short stories are fictional writings that can grasp the reader 's attention and make their imagination run wild with only reading a few pages. Although short in length, short stories are a form of captivating art that are just as thrilling as a regular novel. One particular short story that is completely mesmerizing is, “The Moth” by author Helena Maria Viramontes, that brings the element of magic into affect. In this short first person narrative, a Latina granddaughter recalls back to the time when she was a teenage girl spending time with her grandmother. The narrator describes the lack of apathy she had towards her sisters.…
I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…
My memory of Dr. Seuss is reading funny books like the “Cat in the hat” and Green eggs and Hams. I had no idea that Dr. Seuss took on a much serious role by shining light on the issues in our country. His cartoons not only had a hidden message but the portrait could tell the story alone. “What This Country Needs Is a Good Mental Insectide” written by D.r Seuss. Shows a picture of citizens following each other in a single file line and they all seemed to be all dressed alike.…
Over time, the fields had many plant species thriving. The goldenrod group began to dominate the fields by growing taller, thus outcompeting other plants for the sun. This drew outbreaks of the leaf beetle, that specialized in eating goldenrods. The goldenrod population fell,…
Firefly: The Best of both Worlds Popular culture introduces individuals to communities, heck it helps create communities. Think about the TV shows and the bands you like, you are drawn to others who also enjoy those things, right? Just like fables and fairytales, shows like Firefly, the Simpsons, Parks and Rec, or Avatar bring people together through common interests and viewings. TV shows and movies have created huge communities around them and have given people who are literally across the world a way to connect and engage with each other. And if that’s not beautiful then I don’t know what is!…
Minerva Mirabel is one of the most outgoing characters throughout the course of the novel, and her peers expect her to be. In the beginning of the novel, present day Dede, her sister, describes Minerva, saying that “‘Minerva was always into her wrongs and rights.’ Dede realizes she is speaking to the picture of Minerva, as if she were assigning her a part, pinning her down with a handful of adjectives, the beautiful, intelligent, high-minded Minerva… Dede affirms, used to this fixed, monolithic language around interviewers and mythologizers of her sisters” (6,7). Alvarez uses the word “monolithic” specifically at this early point in the novel to emphasize how the first description of the protagonist is one used only to fit the views and expectations…
