Purpose: Informative Speech
Specific Purpose: Awareness of the threat of global warming
Introduction:
I. In the words of Leonardo DiCaprio after receiving his Oscar, “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”
II. While many of us have heard about global warming, we do not view it significantly important as we all should. Global warming is defined as the increase in Earth’s average surface temperature and due to significant climate changes recorded by scientists taking place as of late and in years past, it is becoming a cause of concern.
III. The affects from global warming are hurting Earth in a negative way and it is mostly due to the release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere by human-fueled activities. Therefore, it should be a cause of concern to all of us because it has significant effects on both natural environment and human life. IV. Due to having done my research and using valid sources upon this topic I am aware of the threat of global warming and today I will be informing everyone the effects of concern that are causing it to become a major issue. With that being said I’ll begin by discussing what is causing global warming to take place right before our eyes.
Body:
I. To put it bluntly, the cause of global warming is human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas.
a. These are the significant driving factors in global warming. According to Global Warming from Encyclopedia of Global Warming and Climate Change “Many human processes ranging from industry, transportation, power stations, agriculture, fossil fuel development and usage, to residential and commercial activities have variously led to the production of high amounts of greenhouse gases.”
b. For centuries, the production and absorption of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases was in balance. But in the last century, human activity has overwhelmed the Earth’s natural feedback mechanism. As a result it has caused global climate change which is taking place and effecting the environment.
II. Climate change is already beginning to transform life on Earth. Around the globe, seasons are shifting, temperatures are climbing and sea levels are rising. According to Justin Gillis of the New York Times, “scientists reported that 2015 was the hottest year in the historical record by far, breaking a mark set only a year before.” a. As it continues some areas of the earth will become wetter, while others will experience heavy droughts. Since warmer air brings heavier storms, there will be an increased chance of stronger and more life-threatening storms. b. As temperatures rise globally, droughts will become more frequent and more severe, with potential devastating consequences for agriculture, water supply and human health. As northern countries warm, disease-carrying insects migrate north, carrying viruses with them that we have not yet built immunity for. NASA states in an article about global climate change, “Southwest region will experience increased heat; drought and insect outbreaks, all linked to climate change, have increased wildfires. Declining water supplies, reduced agricultural yields, health impacts in cities due to heat, and flooding and erosion in coastal areas are additional concerns.” It’s accurate for our region and it will just continue to get worse in due time if changes aren’t
