My mother told me explicitly about how “Jane Doe” was caught locking lips with a coworker at work. Admittedly, there is nothing wrong with an office romance so I thought nothing of it until my mother mentioned the most shocking part. It turned out that they were both married, but not to each other. Basically, they were adulterers who willingly committed a disgusting and vile act. Unsurprisingly, “Jane Doe” denied all the allegations while her husband remained in complete denial, despite the irrefutable evidence of adultery presented to him from a variety of people who witnessed their overly “friendly” interactions. Before and after work, they would meet up and just touch a little way too much. No one could have guessed, though, that the events would unravel to become like this. It was especially weird to discover her infidelity, especially since they always seemed like the perfect couple. They never argued with one another and were always constantly affectionate towards one another. But to make matters worse, the person that she was cheating on her husband with had children too, yet they still committed such atrocious acts of injustice for a long duration of time and made no hesitations to stop their treacherous relationship and confess their wrongdoings. The subject of adultery, itself, is a very complicated matter considering there are many forms of adultery and the definitions vary depending on the individual. This is why in society, there's a tenacity for the lines between love and infidelity to get blurred, especially since the lines do not contain much distinction. In the popular TV shows, Friends, for instance, there was a particular episode in which Ross and Rachel experienced a conflict relating to adultery. Ross (one of the main characters) had a sexual fling with another woman while he and Rachel (his on and off girlfriend) were on a break. When Rachel found out, she was deeply outraged because she believed he cheated on her since even though they were on a break, they were still in a committed relationship. So, what exactly constitutes as infidelity? Is it still cheating if it is just emotionally or is it just wrong entirely? Well, a measure of love commonly used to define love is Sternberg's Triangular Love Scale. The scale concentrates on the idea that love is based on three aspects, which are intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment. Together, those components encompass a relationship and in essence, without those elements, there is no love. Sternberg implores on intimacy as "feelings in a relationship that promote closeness, bondedness, and connectedness," (Leeker & Carlozzi, 2014), which involves a deep connection.
