The theory is based on a collective of three assumptions. The first assumption centers around the concept that men and women perceive the world differently primarily due to the division of labor. The second assumption rests on the fact that men enact their power politically while simultaneously suppressing women’s ideas from obtaining public recognition. Finally, the last assumption, allows women to participate in society only if they transform their distinctive ideas, experiences, and beliefs to match male perspective and language. According to the Muted Group Theory, male dominated silencing towards women and other inferior groups happen in many ways. The four highlighted are: ridicule, ritual, control, and harassment. In India, however, this power distribution led silencing habitually results in rape and other crime towards women. For example, a twenty-nine-year-old New Delhi Municipal Council contract worker visited a local hospital under the pretext of her job. Her five-month involvement with the hospital involved meeting multiple physicians and hospital staff to explain content of the new government enforced hospital policies. On the eve of October 6th, 2016, said contract worker was leaving her job when she was grabbed and held hostage in the hospital laboratory. For the 4 hours she was held captive, she was repeatedly raped by two hospital technicians as well as a physician she interacted with on a daily basis. Upon her release, her captors threatened to fire her if she went to the police. In fear of losing her job, she chose to remain quiet and continue her job at the hospital. One week later, she was raped again, this time by the hospital gardener. It’s a tragedy to think that the second rape could have been prevented if only the woman chose to speak up. Sexual harassment aside, the men used their influence to control the woman
