Incivility Definition

Incivility and civility play a major role within our society. Crude, rude, and obnoxious behavior have often replaced good manners and is affecting sports, children, and culture within America. Incivility is described as the quality of being uncivil. In today’s society incivilities are more prominent compared to the acts of civility seen through the news, social media, and personal experiences. My experience with personal incivility has greatly impacted my life in both a negative and positive way. Acts of incivility can come from the least things like simply not holding open a door, road rage, taking credit for others work, or poor sportsmanship, and lead towards bigger issues like cyberbullying.

But these wonderful sites can also have a negative impact and can be used to hurt other people. The effects of bullying, whether in person or online can have similar effects on a child. Cyberbullying is a form of Bullying. Hiding behind a pretty screen, doesn’t make it less hateful, written words have power. Children who are cyberbullied may turn towards alcohol and drugs, skip school, be unwilling to attend school, receive poor grades, have lower self-esteem and can develop serious mental health problems.
At age fifteen, I was exposed to the worst form of Incivility: cyberbullying. This form of incivility, all started after an ex-boyfriend made it abundantly clear that he didn’t want to speak with me, yet he and his friends hacked into my account on Facebook shortly after the break up.
