In the Land of the Free Sui San Far takes an ordinary family, through the United States Customs process, when things go wrong. Hom Hing and Lea Choo do not have the right papers to bring their “little one” into the United States and are forced to leave their child with custom until they obtain papers from Washington saying that the child is theirs. The papers do not come for ten months and even then they are illegally obtained by a lawyer they paid, but by that time the child had forgotten about his parents. The title, In the Land of the Free contradicts what the characters’ experience in America and they are not feeling the “freedom” they thought they would without their beloved “little one.” In the story Sui Sin Far gives off the illusion …show more content…
The family realizes maybe America is not as free as they thought it was going to be. The “free” part of the title suggests the family is going there for a second chance to make money, be successful, and/or be a perfect family. Though it could also mean they are starting a new life with no strings attached and they can be new people without any unsatisfactory reputations, if they had any to begin with. However, Hom Hing family is broken apart and separated and his child is “imprisoned” at a foster care system which is not what a reader would have in mind when he/she is thinking about freedom. Freedom can sometimes mean sacrifice in which to gain freedom you must be willing to give something up sometimes and Hom Hing and Lea Choo was required to give up their child (unwilling) to gain the freedom America provides.
The author, Sui Sin Far, has given the title of the story for a reason could she have been saying it in a sarcastic way or in a spiteful way. After reading the story a reader knows that the title is misleading but could Sui Sin Far meant for the title to be read in a sarcastic voice. It would make sense to read in sarcastically due to Hom Hing and Lea Choo feel anything but free. They are waiting on papers from Washington to

I am bringing this back to the african americans sorta, but african americans could not go to FL, TX, VA, AL and etc. because they could be captured. They left their homes, their friends, they sometimes even had to leave their loved ones even though they never wanted to. So it wasnt “land of the free” it was the land of if you placed a foot on the state, you could be captured or dead, place. But the union did get some states so they weren’t slave states, and from our point of view know in 2018 we can see that they did succeed, and that most places in the world are “land of the free”…

This is seen in a speech given by Martin Luther King when he claims that he “affirmed [the] statement [that] America [was not] free” (Source A). The rhetoric device given here is pathos, with an exemplar use of the freedom of America being used. Many Americans fervently jump to defend their rights, but King contradicts that sentiment to great outcome. This strikingly true statement causes Americans to be taken aback by its surprising validity, with many of the spells that were put upon them being broken. They have been told that ever since 1776 we were free; after the civil war everybody was free.…

In the poem, Captivity by Louise Erdrich, a deeper meaning of the hardships and liberation of captivity are shown. The overall meaning of the poem the author is expressing to the reader is that one should follow the word of god while being held in captivity, but to not limit themselves to being narrow minded and limited in terms of thinking. The narrator of the poem is expressing to the audience that the experience of her capture was eventually an eye opener to her. It is a unique experience that made her question her entire life and purpose on this planet. This theme was shown in the poem when the speaker first mentioned that, “We were pursued by God’s agents or pitch devils, I did not know.…

Freedom is a cloudy term, and various ideologies perceive it differently. However, while it is plainly difficult to define what we mean when we throw around the word freedom, we treat freedom like a unity. For such a complex, ill-defined construct, freedom is deployed in literature and society exceedingly often. Morrison deconstructs this unity, overturning the assumptions attached to the…

“Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” Freedom is the state of being free or at liberty, rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. Since birth, we learn to adapt into a life of restrictions and limitations. Although some countries are considered to be ‘free’, we are still bound by the oppressive chains of society and government.
