By having this skill, it helps to manage our relationship with our peers. For instance, a boss understands that when their staff felt appreciated by their superiors, it drives them to work beyond expectation and it also improves relationship between the boss and the staff.
In order to improve on a personal level, I should first think how my actions could impact on others. Usually, I would act first before knowing that I might have hurt someone’s feeling. Also, I need to be more sensitive about other people’s feeling in order to understand the reason that they behaved that way.
How to understand myself through self-awareness? We would need to identify what we need to be self-aware of. First, what positive traits do we have and how we can improve them? For instance, my strength is that when someone try to look down on me, I will perservere and work even harder to show them that I can definitely do it. Second, what negative traits do we have and how we can overcome them? For instance, my weakness is that people always take advantage of my kindness. I would need to know who is genuinely worth helping.

For instance, a married couple has decided to meet up for a special dinner tonight. She dressed up well and was ready to meet him. The husband, however, was late for almost three hours and there is no call from him. She was furious and was hesitating to call and reprimand him but instead, she went back home. He returned home and apologised to her while explaining why he did not turn up for dinner. Gladly, she did not raise her voice against him. She understands that there is a reason why her husband was late. Therefore, she focuses on what her husband has to say. There are always two ways to manage ourselves. Either positively or negatively. In this scenario, the wife approached the situation positively in which, she overcome her anger by listening to her husband’s reason. She could have approached the situation negatively by calling her husband and shouting through the phone while he is at work in which, could affect him to continue whatever was happening in the office and it would also portray a negative image of herself in public. Our emotions can affect one’s thoughts and actions.
