As a diet clerk at Unity Point – Meriter, one of my main roles is taking meal orders from patients via the phone, a task that can often feel automatic. At first glance, this role may not seem to have a big impact, but my experience has proven otherwise. Soon after I got hired, a patient called down to order her dinner and did not realize she had been given a renal diet order. While this may not seem like a big hurdle, this patient was already dealing with a great deal of stress due to her hospitalization. She was craving mashed potatoes, a comfort food to help her feel a little more at home. While potatoes are not compliant with this diet, I was able to spend ten minutes on the phone with the patient discussing all her options and helping her to navigate the diet order. With other patients waiting in queue, it would have been easy to rush her along and move on to the next task. However, by spending time talking to the patient, I was able bring her a little comfort during an otherwise stressful time in her life.
My passion for health and helping others took root at an early age. In middle school I spent time volunteering as an assistant teacher at my dance studio. A position that allowed me to promote a healthy

Public speaking has always been an area that I have struggled in, but my experiences as a dance instructor have helped me to work towards overcoming this. Once a semester parents come in to observe what the children have been learning. This has provided me the opportunity to practice my public speaking skills. I have become immensely more comfortable talking in front of groups of people, as I introduce the class, give parents information on the recital, and give a recap of the semester. In addition, each week I lead a class of 15 students on my own, pushing me out of my comfort zone to help me grow as a public

We are only friends. I press to that fact, but still my heart beats a hundred times faster as we dance together. We had spent quite some time choreographing this dance together and here we are: the steps running into a well-rehearsed picture, the artists are us. And though there is no audience, we dance as if there are a thousand watching our every movement.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…

Twenty-five seconds into our two-minute performance, the soundtrack glitched and abruptly stopped. Panic shortly set in, but we could not let our worry show. All fourteen of us kept our rhythm and timing--not one tap out of step--and finished the dance as we had practiced. Our impromptu acapella tap routine not only received a standing ovation but also helped us take first overall. Music malfunctions are a tap dancer's worst nightmare; we depend on the beat and rhythm to stay in sync.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

I burst into my ballet studio, Academy of Dance, full of energy. I crossed my fingers as I bounced into the dressing room and started getting ready for ballet.…

I didn’t find anything about myself in this essay because of the fact that I had already wrote about this in high school. in my second essay I had wrote about whether or not heading should be allowed in soccer. I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…

Moreover, the food logs provide an oversimplified picture of my nutritional intake. One important thing I observed from my food logs is while I am exceeding the daily recommend amount of calories, I am not meeting my nutritional needs. For example, I am not getting a sufficient amount of dairy, protein, or calcium; strangely, I do enjoy eating these foods. After doing some research, I discovered strategies to deal with this problem.…

I started my journey in health and fitness at a young age. I was always one of those kids who just could not sit still - so I was into everything, climbing trees, riding bikes, swimming, sports, you name it I was into it. However my discipline to this way of life came when I discovered basketball, it was when I was about 13/14 and shot up to practically the height I am now, so my teachers said why don't you try and develop your skills as a basketball player as I was taller than most of my teachers at 13 which lead them to think I'd grow to be some kind of 7 foot giant, but unfortunately that didn't happen, would've been cool though.…
