Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, ‘’ When you get to the end of the rope, tie a knot and hang on.’’ Those words were practically my motivation and expectation during this semester of my first year in college. As a recent graduate from high school I knew I didn’t have all the material I needed to proceed as a college student; however, I wanted to take the advantage of my education. It was a eerie feeling the first weeks of college. Being in this class I expected to grasp the information and develop an enormous package of study habits. I felt as though I didn’t fit in this class because english was always my strongest subject throughout my years of school. But I just used this class as inspiration to work hard and pursue my efforts for a higher english class. A.S Byatt wrote, ‘’Vocabularies are crossing circles and loops. We are defined by the lines we choose to cross or to be confined by.’’ And she is actually humorously right. Words looks so simple, but they’re always misused. I found out how important words are when my professor instructed word parts. I learned that words contains a prefix, root, and a suffix. And each word part has their significant way of defining their meaning and their use. Also I made index cards with vocabulary words, root words, and prefixes. I studied them an hour each day until it was the testing day. I found out if you knew how to break down a word and understand it’s meaning, then you’ll notice words in the media. Such as code words the news uses to confuse viewers that doesn’t know much vocabulary. As I said before, reading becomes more unchallenging when you have can understand the vocabulary. Prior knowledge of reading comes in handy when you need a tool to help you evolve your reading. However, summarizing is the best source of reading. A good reader doesn’t reads the whole passage. Summarizing is time consuming. And that is a good college tool to understand time management. I read The Richest Man in Babylon, by George Clason for a class project. It was a novel about a man becoming wealthy and explaining how he did so. …show more content…
This class taught me what I did not know. I literally had to learn how to brainstorm, research, and write differently. Now whenever I write, I brainstorm before. I also learned that I start paragraphs better with a question or a quote. Writing 3-2-8’s helped me give more evidence and explanations. Brush stroke were very helpful also. This was the first year I ever heard of a brush stroke. Now I developed a understanding of brush strokes, I use them when I am trying to paint a image with my words. There are more than one brush stroke. Figurative language has always been a accolade I’ll use in my essays because it was easy to …show more content…
I discovered flash cards, study blue, group studying, and summarizing my stories in sixty words or less. In my english class there was an assignment that was called minute sketches. We had to draw a picture, the word, its meaning and the word part twice. That was very helpful because I am a auditorial and visual learner. I mainly focus on understanding, and organizing facts. The way I learn information is by steps. It has to make sense for me to understand. I want to know how you got it, from who, when and why is it important for me to know. My studying habits changed drastically due to the assignments of my college

Looking at the test questions for clues helps me understand what the question is focusing on so I can remember the exact topic and hopefully pick the correct answer. This class has been very difficult for me, but I have benefited a ton from taking it. Overall I think that a strength of mine when writing was that I had background knowledge on all of my topics. Some of my weaknesses were that I would be too wordy at times and my grammar was not always the best. It was difficult for me to write lengthy papers since I would run out of things to talk about. My favorite essay was the description essay because I enjoyed getting to go that in depth with details.…
