Gone are the days when magazine media resisted change, magazine professionals today embrace it with endeavors, creativity and better knowledge. As we learn new practice, metrics and analytics tools, advancements in digital technology open up new opportunities to extend, enhance and rethink magazine brands everyday. From examining the constantly changing magazine industry, through editorial and business lens, I believe pursuing the following four areas will allow magazine media to remain relevant and indispensable to society and readers.

Readers today change their behaviors every time new technology emerges, and you probably have heard how a media company should consider itself a tech company in order to keep up with the fast-paced competition. A magazine can also gain such benefit from having a sister digital pure play that doubles as a media lab. Agile by nature, the digital pure play can provide content that is native on every emerging platform. It can also quickly implement new features and has the freedom to experiment, without diluting the original magazine brand.

When Atlantic Media launched Quartz (Qz.com), it could experiment with a new digital revenue model, a new business plan with exclusive ad partners, and sponsored content. Quartz could pioneer in the digital territory without diluting The Atlantic. At the same time, launching Quartz also sent a message that Atlantic Media was striving to lead the digital media competition. With Quartz, Atlantic Media now has personnel capable of creative innovation. Such technological capability today also means business agility, allowing the magazine to respond to readers and advertisers '

I will be bringing to the industry a mindset that embraces change, with skills needed to always connect magazines with the readers. In a long run, I hope to channel my experience and knowledge to create new ways of content delivery that values quality. I intend to share all what I have learned with magazine professionals and pass it on to younger generation by teaching in the future. My commitment and self-development for magazine and digital media, I believe, make me a strong candidate for the William Randolph Hearst Endowment for Magazine Media Scholarship.
