“Congratulations, Honey! I’m so proud of you,” Mrs. Pierson said with tears in her eyes as I walked off stage into her arms. “Thank you so much,” I mumbled into her shoulder. “I can’t believe I’m officially a graduated student!” In that moment I remember thinking back to my first day of the school year. I had just finished my morning classes and was walking up the stairs to the 20 minute homeroom period I had with Mrs. Pierson. High school graduation was a day we had dreamed of for years. In all the movies, all the T.V. shows and books, graduation seems like the most defining moment of the character’s lives. Especially for my classmates and I, who spent all of high school with weights on our shoulders to be better than the other schools, even better than our closest friends. With so much to achieve before we could be done graduation always seemed like a far off dream. Finally grasping my diploma in my hands left me feeling confused and lost.
