In the past, present and future there were and will always be gender roles. Gender roles play a very important role in todays society, changing and modelling many people’s thoughts and experiences in very negative and harmful ways. I will be explaining how gender roles have been very harmful in children 's growth, development and life choices as well as how detrimental they have been on many adults and teenagers mental and physical health.
Gender roles are the way people act and express themselves in either being male or female. Many times gender roles differ in different cultures, countries and religions and all of these factors have expectations in the way boys and girls should act, dress and present themselves. Children then learn these gender roles from a young age, coming from their parents, peers, religious beliefs or the media and world around them.
Gender roles also cause stereotypes, which is the main problem rooting from them. A stereotype is a judgement or bias based on a large group of people which unfairly represents them. This then results in unfair treatment because of a persons gender, which is widely known as sexism. There are many ways we can speak up and help dismantle many sexist beliefs, from simply learning about the effect they have on people and speaking up against gender roles online, or pointing it out to people in daily life. Gender roles are a social construct, and there has been evidence to show that men and women have no innate ideas from birth about how to act as a female or male. To truly destroy the idea that men and women have different roles, or one gender is more superior than the other, we have to look inside ourselves and our beliefs and challenge some destructive thoughts and feelings we may have
