Diversity is a buzzword in today’s society. I think diversity is not a coalition of different races on a school flier, or bulletin board or on the school newspaper. Diversity is a sharing and embracing each other’s individual beliefs, cultures and thoughts. I would like to see advocacy more than sympathy because advocacy helps people who are disengaged. No matter where we are coming from or no matter how we look like, we should create a way all together that support, advocate and promote the differences in a harmony.
It is always the hardest thing for me when someone asks who I am. It is a basic question however, I have to go back and think about all the things that shape who I am, what I believe in, what I do on a daily basis. I am a white Turkish-American came to the United States in 2010. People thinks of me as white American as soon as I start speaking English; they recognize from my accent that I am not American. They do not I am Muslim, part of mixed of middle eastern and Europe culture. As soon as they start asking where I am from, the conversation continues with what I believe in and what I do on daily basis. After 9/11, people started approaching the Muslim Americans differently than how they did before. When people learn what I believe in, they ask me more questions about my religion and ethnicity. It is so important to me because it means that people are not just automatically assuming something about me. I think it is important because they are asking and clarifying the perceptions they have. As an educator, I try to have more conversations with my students in and out of the classroom in order to understand their culture, belief, family life etc. It is important to learn more about them because there is so much more than what we see. In order to teach effectively and to reach all of the students in our classroom, educators must know how to approach students with a different race, religion, socioeconomic status, and language. There are many barriers to prevent students from learning effectively; I think cultural beliefs is one of them, according to Cole (2008), students from poor and minority ethnic groups do not receive good instruction due to numerous barriers including cultural differences. Part 2: Personal SWOT Analysis Strengths I have working experience with students from minority groups. I have good interpersonal skills with students. I am able to identify students’ abilities, interests, and cultural differences. I am open to learning different cultures, religion, and lifestyles. Weaknesses I sometimes struggle with students’ ways of learning. I am not good at learning different languages other than English. …show more content…

Opportunities
Our school fosters diverse learning community so I have the opportunity to learn more about our students’ cultures, food and religion.
Students are offered four different world languages as an elective choice so it helps them to understand each other well.
Our school organizes several multicultural events throughout the year in order to promote cultural awareness.
One of our faculty members is good at using technology in his classroom; we have the opportunity learn more about Universal Design for Learners (UDL). Threats
If a teacher does not understand the cultural differences between his/her culture and students’ cultures the teacher cannot reach all of his/her students.
If we do not respect the diversity of student and staff, we cannot create a safe learning environment.
