Imagery And Symbolism In The Matrix

Decent Essays
In The Matrix, the whole concept of reality is challenged as Neo finds himself questioning every memory of his existence. Symbolism plays a significant role in this story, appearing in dialogue and even in the names of the characters. Morpheus' name, which is shared with the Greek god of dreams, highlights the difference between waking thought(real world) and dreaming(the matrix). Altenatively, being that Morpheus was the gatekeeper to the "real world" the whole film could be the fantasies of a delusional man. This is the kind of message The Matrix seeks to send: nothing is certain. Another symbol is the name Neo. This name means new, referring to Neo's being entirely new to the real world, and to the new beginning for man his birth into reality

In the novel “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, I noticed there was numerous amounts of symbolism, one which stood out to me was the radio. Werner who is one of the main characters would always be fascinated by radios due to a show he would listen to by a professor named Etienne. He was selected to attend the National Political Institute due to his extortionary ability to fix any radio. After in the book Marie, who is the other main character and who is Etienne's grandniece became curious and wondered if anyone would still listen to her great uncles broadcast. At that same moment Werner was investigating an enemy transmission and eventually found the source and visited it to find in astonishment that it was a blind girl he thinks…

Set in California near the Salinas River during The Great Depression, the novel begins when two grown men come looking in search of new jobs on a ranch. In Thomas C. In the epic The Odyssey, Homer incorporates the use of rhetorical strategies and literary devices to develop Calypso. Through the use of imagery and symbolism, Calypso and her island seem beautiful and perfect at first, but the symbolism from the imagery revealed that Calypso had a “hidden” intention and the symbols foreshadowed her true selfish nature. Although Calypso is caring for Odysseus she is self-centered and not letting him return to Ithaca so she can keep him for her own. Also, Homer uses rhetorical strategies during a persuasive argument between Hermes and Calypso. Calypso utilizes ethos, pathos, and logos to convince Hermes that Odysseus should stay on the island with her which reiterates her selfish character.…

In the movie there is a strong relation between Neo the computer hacker that has always doubted his reality, and Descartes who had these very same deceptions almost four hundred years before the movie was even brought to theatres. Descartes theory from Mediations pretty much could have written the script for this movie. In summary, Descartes talks about how he believes there is an omnipotent God that has made him who he is. He does not know if he should believe that this God has given him a deception that the sky, earth, and shapes or sizes are real to comfort him; or if he is just being tricked by an evil demon that is trying to deceive him and ensnare his judgment for their own purposes. This theory is brought to life when Morpheus wakes Neo up.…
